Raspberry Pi 5 Rack Mount: 21 Mounts and a 35 mm Ceiling
I own no Raspberry Pi 5 and no rack. The Mac mini that runs this blog sits on a desk, and every earlier Pi 5 post here was built from spec sheets and other people’s threads, labelled as such. I am writing a fourth one because the Pi 5 NVMe compatibility list was the most visited page on this blog last week: 5 human visits, out of 47 across all posts, in a week where nothing else got more than 3. The next question those readers seem to ask, judging by Google’s autocomplete on 2026-09-10, is where to put the board once it has a drive under it: rack mount, 10 inch, 1u, poe, 3d print, all in the first ten completions.
So on 2026-09-10 I read every Pi 5 rack mount I could reach from five makers, 21 products across 10-inch and 19-inch racks, and normalized what the listings scatter: boards per rack unit, where the SSD goes, what the maker says about HAT clearance, and price on the maker’s own site. Then I did the arithmetic the listings avoid, stacking the official drawings of the Pi 5, the Active Cooler and the M.2 HAT+ against the two clearance figures makers actually publish. This is the tenth post in my 10-inch rack series; the rack dimensions post has the cabinet sizes, and the NVMe HAT census covers the boards that go under these Pis.

What I collected
DeskPi, which sells the same metal under the GeeekPi name on Amazon; UCTRONICS, whose catalogue has nine 1U Pi mounts on its own; racknex in Austria; MyElectronics in the Netherlands; and Calculated MFG, a small shop that prints PETG mounts and tests them with the official cooler and M.2 HAT. Seven of the 21 are for 10-inch racks, fourteen for 19-inch. I left out DeskPi’s 2U tray for the Pi 4 and 5 without NVMe boards, because its listing does not say how many boards it holds, and I left out mounts sold only on Etsy, because I could not read their listings.

The 35 mm ceiling
Only two makers publish how much room a Pi has above the tray. racknex says the UM-SBC-306 leaves about 35 mm from the underside of the Pi’s PCB to the top of the kit. MyElectronics says its Pro Enclosed 1U leaves 28 mm above the top surface of the PCB. Everyone else says “room for a PoE HAT” or nothing. So I stacked the official numbers against those two figures.

One layer fits. An M.2 HAT+ over an Active Cooler tops out around 21 mm above the board, inside MyElectronics’ 28 mm and well inside racknex’s 35 mm once you add the 3 mm underside and the PCB itself. Two layers do not. A PoE HAT stacked on top of the M.2 HAT+ lands at 32 to 37 mm above the board, past the 28 mm enclosure and at the edge of the 35 mm kit before you count the tray’s own standoffs. That is the whole reason UCTRONICS and DeskPi put the NVMe board under the Pi on a 100 × 60 mm base: it spends height downward, where a tray has a few millimetres to give, and leaves the 40-pin header free for exactly one HAT on top.
The owner reports agree with the arithmetic from both sides. In Project Mini Rack issue #186, one builder runs a Waveshare PoE HAT (G) on top and a Pimoroni NVMe Base Duo underneath, on DeskPi’s $15.99 SBC shelf, and reports “It fits in 1U.”
Frank Wayne, mounting five Pi 5s with Waveshare’s earlier PoE HAT (F) in UCTRONICS’ five-slot 2.5-inch rack in May 2024, found the HAT’s pass-through pins “extend a couple of millimeters above the top edge of the module face,” and when the rack was bolted under a switch “the pins were shorted by contact with the bare metal of switch case.” He printed a pin cover and wrote that the assembly was “too high to fit with adequate clearance in 1U.” One HAT with a fan and transformer on top was already too tall; the fix was the same as the design rule above, which is to keep the tall parts low.
What owners ran into
The Frank Wayne build has a second finding that no listing will tell you. Five identical Pi 5s, same heatsink, same thermal pads, same rack, under the same stress test, “saw temperatures between the mid-60s to 84.5 degrees,” and the ones past 80 °C throttled. Position in the rack did not explain it. If you plan a five-board 1U, budget for the worst board, not the average, and read my rack fan post for what a 5 V fan actually moves.
Jeff Geerling’s own Mini Rack 002 is the reference 10-inch Pi cluster: a RackMate T0, the DeskPi 2U with four NVMe boards, four Pi 5 8 GB, and a 260 W GaN charger, $767 in January 2025. Two comments under it are the useful part.
Booting from USB with that charger produced a “3000” current warning until one owner set usb_max_current_enable=1 in config.txt, and another wrote that “whenever I unplug one of my RPi5’s from the USB-c the other one reboots,” because the multi-port charger renegotiates. PoE avoids both, which is why every build in these threads that runs more than two boards ends up on a PoE switch, and why the PDU post counted power bricks as a real cost.
Density is the open complaint. Issue #187 opens with “The DeskPi 2x tray fits only 2 raspi in 2U” and asks for three per U; Geerling’s answer is that MyElectronics’ 16-board 2U exists only in 19 inches, and that a printed LabStack module, 1,168 stars and last pushed in May 2026, gets up to eight into a 10-inch 2U. A Thingiverse design linked in the same thread claims three per 1U with Pi 3, 4 and 5 variants, untested with any HAT by the person who linked it. Nothing you can buy in 10 inches beats racknex’s 2.5 per U, and that kit is sold out.
PoE plus NVMe on one HAT is the shape most builders want and the one with the most caveats. Geerling tested three in October 2024: the n-fuse board is “so low-profile it necessitates breaking a few fins off the Active Cooler,” the GeeekPi P33’s transformer “makes this solution a bit tall,” and the HackerGadgets board only fits the official case at the cost of turning it into “an easy-bake oven.” The PineBoards dual HAT that issue #186 wanted had already vanished, site down, resellers empty. UCTRONICS’ $149.99 bundle solves the sourcing by shipping four of its own PoE+ NVMe HATs, and then limits you to 2230 and 2242 drives and warns in its own listing about Phison-based WD drives not booting. A four-drive SATA HAT, the Radxa Penta, needs 2U outright; the PiRAID build in issue #158 printed its own bracket for it.
Pi 4 mounts and the port swap
The Pi 5 moved the Ethernet jack back to the corner below the USB stack, where the Pi 3 had it, so the Pi 4 layout with Ethernet next to the power connector is gone; pimylifeup’s side-by-side spells it out and the official drawing shows the RJ45 at the lower right. For open trays this changes nothing, and UCTRONICS lists the Pi 5 in the titles of its 2.5-inch-bracket racks that date from the Pi 4 era. For anything with a front panel it changes everything, which is why UCTRONICS sells a “Pi Rack Pro for 4B” at $289.99 and a separate “Pi 5 Rack Pro” at $269.99, and why MyElectronics’ enclosed 1U page still says “Raspberry Pi 5 Hats we’ll have to wait for.” If a mount’s page mentions only the Pi 4 in its bullets, assume the front cutouts are wrong.
The printed route
Half of the autocomplete demand is for STL files, and I could not read Printables or Thingiverse on 2026-09-10; both refuse a plain request, so the links in the threads above are all I can pass on. What I can say from the listings is that Calculated MFG’s PETG mounts are the printed route without a printer: $34.99 for a 10-inch 1U that holds two Pi 5s, or $19.99 for a half-width case, with the maker stating it tested the official cooler and M.2 HAT together. Those are the only mounts in this census whose maker claims to have tested that exact stack, and they cost less than the steel ones.
What I would buy
None of this is from use; it is what the census and the threads point at. For a 10-inch rack with one or two boards, the DeskPi 1U with two NVMe boards at $39.99 is the cheapest way to get NVMe under the Pi and leave the header free for PoE, and it fits every RackMate cabinet; its 4.0-star average is the lowest of DeskPi’s rack parts and I could not read the reviews to learn why. For four boards in 10 inches, the DeskPi 2U at $79.99 is the part Geerling’s reference build used, twenty dollars cheaper than when he bought it. For a 19-inch rack, the UCTRONICS five-slot Rack Basic at $98.99 is the densest NVMe option a vendor actually ships, and the five-slot 2.5-inch version at $59.99 is the one Frank Wayne filled, with the caveat that his PoE HATs did not clear it. I would not buy the Rack Pro at $269.99 for four LCDs, and I would not import racknex or MyElectronics into the US at a 15 to 50 % tariff when UCTRONICS makes the same density domestically. Whatever the tray, put the SSD under the board, put one HAT on top, and pick a PoE HAT without a transformer standing on it; my Pi 5 PoE HAT census sorts twenty boards by exactly that.

Does the Raspberry Pi 5 Active Cooler fit in a 1U rack mount?
Yes. The cooler is 13.7 mm tall on its official drawing, and the M.2 HAT+ ships with 16 mm spacers specifically so it can sit above the cooler. That whole stack ends about 21 mm above the Pi’s PCB, inside the 28 mm MyElectronics publishes for its enclosed 1U and the 35 mm racknex publishes for its 10-inch 1U kit. What does not fit is a second HAT stacked on the first.
How many Raspberry Pi 5 boards fit in a 10-inch rack?
Two per rack unit from any maker that sells metal: DeskPi’s 1U holds two, its 2U holds four, and racknex’s UM-SBC-306 holds two. racknex’s sold-out UM-SBC-308 reaches five in 2U. Printed designs claim three per U or eight per 2U, and a 19-inch rack holds four to eight per U from the same makers.
Can you power a rack of Raspberry Pi 5s over PoE with NVMe drives?
Yes, but put the NVMe board under the Pi and the PoE HAT on top rather than stacking both on the header. Owners in Project Mini Rack run a Waveshare PoE HAT (G) over a Pimoroni NVMe base inside 1U that way. UCTRONICS sells a 1U bundle with four combined PoE+ NVMe HATs for $149.99, limited to 2230 and 2242 drives. A multi-port USB-C charger is the alternative, and owners report the other boards rebooting when one is unplugged.
