The Mac mini that runs this blog (Mac16,10, M4, 16 GB) sits on a desk with a power cord and nothing else attached. In August it locked me out for 92 hours after an unattended reboot, and the fix was a console login at the machine. Three widths, and the guide that mixed two of them up

“10 inch” is the width of the front panel, and it is the least useful of the three numbers. The one that decides whether a shelf bolts on is the distance between the mounting-hole centers. The one that decides whether a device slides in is the opening between the rails. I found all three stated in three different places, and they agree only once you know which is which.

The Project Mini Rack README, the community reference Jeff Geerling started in January 2025, gives 236.525 mm (9.312 in) between screw holes and “approximately 210mm” of horizontal space. NavePoint publishes a 2D CAD drawing of its 1U blank panel, and the drawing carries all three figures: 253.9 mm overall, 236.4 mm between hole centers, and a recessed lip 197.9 mm wide, which is the part that has to pass between the rails. A third source, a guide to mounting UniFi gear, says the rails sit “254 mm apart center-to-center”. That is the panel width, not the hole spacing; a panel 254 mm wide cannot have holes 254 mm apart. The guide’s usable-width figure, 200 to 210 mm, is fine.

The offsets are inherited from the 19-inch standard, which is why the numbers check out. Wikipedia’s 19-inch article puts the full-size panel at 482.6 mm, the hole centers at 464.2 to 465.8 mm, and the rail gap at 450.85 mm: 17.5 mm from panel edge to hole center, and about 14.25 mm from hole center to the rail edge. Apply the same offsets to 254 mm and you get 236.5 mm hole centers and a 222 mm opening, which is exactly the “~222mm (8.75″)” a mount designer quoted in the Project Mini Rack issue tracker. NavePoint’s 198 mm lip is narrower than that opening on purpose, to clear rail flanges and cage-nut clips. So: 254 is the panel, 236.5 is the holes, 222 is the daylight, and about 200 is what you can safely design a tray to.

What the half-width rack does not have is a standard. EIA-310-D, IEC 60297 and DIN 41494 all define the 482.6 mm series; the English Wikipedia article gives the 10-inch format one sentence and no numbers. The 1U height (44.45 mm) and the 12.70/15.88/15.88 mm hole pattern carry over unchanged, which is the only reason a vendor can print “1U” on a 10-inch shelf. Six cabinets from the listings, as of 2026-09-03

I pulled the Amazon listings and vendor pages for the cabinets that come up first in the mini-rack threads. None of the listings prints the inside width, the only figure that matters, and one contradicts itself on the outside width.

Depth splits the family in two: 7.87 in (200 mm) for the T0, T1 and the Tecmojo, 10.23 in (260 mm) for the Plus models and the T2. DeskPi’s own $26.99 mini-PC shelf page warns that the shelf “may not be deep enough for the T2 and T0-Plus, T1-Plus server cabinets”, so accessories do not cross the two depths even within one vendor. Geerling’s January 2025 write-up calls out “depth problems”, and the UniFi guide puts the spread across brands at 180 to 320 mm. The T1 Plus disagrees with itself by 0.83 in on width, and its 3.3 stars on 26 ratings is too thin to conclude anything, but it is the number I would want explained before paying more for depth. Screws are the other catch: Tecmojo lists “tapped/square holes”, NavePoint ships 10-32 screws with its panel, and a commenter on a January 2026 Tecmojo review reported “mis-matched screws. They wouldn’t thread into the frame properly.”

What fits: one Mac mini per row, with the button facing the floor

Apple lists the 2024 Mac mini at 12.7 × 12.7 × 5.0 cm. Against a 222 mm opening that is one per row; two would need 254 mm, the entire panel. At 50 mm tall it also overshoots 1U by 5.5 mm, which is why every mount I found is 1.5U or larger. A designer in the Project Mini Rack tracker printed exactly that in January 2025, and the first tester came back with two lines I would want on the box: “The power button on the bottom left side is inaccessible” and “despite the spacers, it’s not snug enough in there and can spin a lil and fall out”. The designer added that with the Mac “both intaking and exhausting air out of the same set of vents” some air may recirculate, and recommended fans. Apple put the button underneath on purpose; its executives said people hardly use it. My August lockout is the counterexample, and a tray that hides the button turns a two-minute fix into unracking.

The commercial options split by rack width. A 10-inch 1.5U PETG mount on Amazon lists at 10 × 6 × 2.6 in, open frame, with a keystone jack for the Ethernet port, and says nothing about reaching the button. Three per 1.25U against one per 1.5U is 3.6 times the density, so the moment a Mac mini fleet is the plan, 10-inch is the wrong rack.

Not yet. One Mac mini with five empty ports is a tidiness problem, not a rack problem, and the UPS I short-listed in August is a desktop tower that nothing in the 10-inch catalog holds. The trigger is a second box. When that happens, the 200 mm deep RackMate T1 or the Tecmojo 6U clears a 127 mm Mac mini with cable room, and the 4U T0 has 12,835 ratings behind it if four slots are enough. Go to the 260 mm chassis only for a device that needs it, ask the seller for the inside width, bring your own M6 cage nuts or 10-32 screws, and put the Mac mini on a tray you can slide out, because the button is underneath. For more than one Mac mini, buy a 19-inch rack and a tray with front buttons instead.
