The Mac mini that runs this blog is on a desk, on Wi-Fi, with its Ethernet port at zero bytes for the whole window I measured in August. I own no rack and no switch. What I do have is two days of 10-inch rack homework, the geometry and the power, and the third question a mini rack forces is the switch. The search is “10 inch rack switch,” and the autocomplete under it is mostly “mount,” “3d print” and “poe,” which already hints at the answer: people are not asking which switch is narrow enough. They are asking how to screw it in.

So I took the 32 network devices in the Project Mini Rack README (22 in the “rack-mountable” table, 10 in the “fits on a shelf” list, read raw on 2026-09-05), pulled the published width of each from the manufacturer where one exists, and checked what mounting hardware is actually in the box. Width came back for 30 of the 32. Every product line below says whether it comes from a spec page, a datasheet PDF, a listing, or someone who tried to bolt one in.

Width is not the problem

The numbers you need are in the geometry post, so briefly: the panel is 254 mm, the mounting holes are 236.5 mm apart centre to centre, and the opening between the rails is somewhere between the README’s “approximately 210mm” and the ~222 mm one contributor measured on a DeskPi. A device that mounts by its ears therefore needs a body narrower than the opening and ears that reach out to the 236.5 mm hole line. The ear has to cover (236.5 − W) / 2 on each side.

Here is what the 21 rack-mountable devices with a published width look like against those lines.

Published width of the 21 rack-mountable devices with a number I could find, against the four 10-inch rack lines. Widths are from vendor spec pages or datasheets except the two YuanLey rows and the GiGaPlus row, which are from the Amazon listing and the manual attached to it.

The widths cluster hard. Six devices are exactly 200 mm (four MikroTik, two YuanLey), all seven QNAP half-width switches are 207 mm, MikroTik’s CSS318 and the GiGaPlus are both 218, the three 220 mm rows are MikroTik’s router chassis, and the only outlier is the Digitus DN-80115 at 252 mm, which is not a box with ears but a 10-inch faceplate with a switch behind it. Twenty of 21 fit inside the 222 mm opening. Fourteen fit inside the conservative 210. If the question is “will it go between the rails,” the README is already right and this post could stop here.

Ears are the problem: 4 of 22 ship them

The reason the search autocomplete says “mount” is that most of these 200-something-millimetre bodies come with hardware for a different rack. The 236.5 mm hole line needs 18.25 mm of ear on each side of a 200 mm switch, 14.75 mm on a QNAP, 9.25 mm on a 218. What ships is usually either a pair of long 19-inch ears or one short and one long, so the device can sit off-centre in a full rack. Jeff Geerling put it plainly when he opened issue #2 in December 2024: the 200 mm form factor “is perfect for hard-mounting it to a mini rack,” but “few manufacturers offer any way to actually do that.”

Going vendor by vendor through the 22 rows, this is what the box contains, and what it costs to get to 10 inches. Prices are the vendor’s own list price read on 2026-09-05; I do not quote Amazon prices because it shows me won.

Count it up. Four of 22 ship 10-inch mounting hardware by the vendor’s own words: both Digitus units, the Intellinet, and MikroTik’s CSS318. Eleven more have a vendor kit that costs $9 (MikroTik, four 200 mm models) or $19 (QNAP, seven models). The remaining seven are on their own: 3D-printed ears, a universal bracket, or nothing. The README labels all 22 “rack-mountable,” and in the sense that a mount exists somewhere, it is right. In the sense that you open the box and screw it in, it is right four times.

What the people who tried it report

The fit reports live in issue #2 (10 comments, 2024-12-20 to 2026-07-25 when I pulled it), issue #76 for the GiGaPlus, and a handful of Amazon reviews. None of these are mine, and I did not verify any of them.

The universal-ear route is the one with the most scar tissue. Geerling bought the Pelopy adjustable kit for his GiGaPlus and found “the screws stick out ever-so-slightly too much, meaning it won’t install into the rack,” and was considering a countersink bit. On 2026-07-25 a second owner, NJB68, tried the same kit on a Middle Atlantic PDU and reported “the holes don’t line up correctly.” On 2025-09-16 joemiller got the GiGaPlus into a Tecmojo 6U with a different adjustable kit and credited the “low profile/flat-topped screws unlike the Pelopy.” Screw-head height is the failure mode nobody puts in a spec.

The NICGIGA S25-0402P, the sibling of YuanLey’s YS25-0402P, is the one clean success in the thread: beemo808 wrote on 2025-01-18 that it “came with ears that fit the 10" rack perfectly,” with the caveat that the hole pattern will not transfer to the other 200 mm switches. ServeTheHome’s 2024 review of the YuanLey says its unit “did not come with rackmount ears,” and the same review found a 75 W power supply behind a 78 W PoE label. The Amazon listing now describes ears in the box, so either the bundle changed or it varies; I cannot tell which from here.

Amazon reviews add two lines worth having. A QSW-3216R-8S8T buyer on 2026-07-02: “Best switch that I could find for my 10” rack, although the mounting hardware is only for 19” rack.” A CRS310-8G+2S+ buyer: “I wasted some filament preemptively printing mounting brackets but it comes with a kit for a 19inch rack.” On the GiGaPlus, ServeTheHome’s teardown says “this one has long rack ears, but they fit a standard 19″ rack,” and a commenter there in May 2026 reported that 10G RJ45 SFP+ modules in it “became very hot and their thermal cut-out repeatedly activating.” That is a module problem more than a switch problem, but a 10-inch rack with no airflow makes it worse, the same physics as the switch overheating post.

Two things the README gets wrong

The list is community-maintained and I would not have a dataset without it, so this is a correction, not a complaint. First, the affiliate link on the QSW-M2106PR-2S2T row, the PoE model with a 310 W budget and a 350 W maximum draw, resolves to ASIN B0BQ5DFYQG, which is the non-PoE M2106R. Buy from that row expecting PoE and you will not get it. Second, the YuanLey YS25-0402P sits in the “rack-mountable” table on the strength of ears that at least one reviewed unit did not have. Neither is a width problem. Both are the box-contents problem again.

If I were buying one for a 10-inch rack

I am not, and I have measured the reason. But the table sorts itself into three honest answers, and I registered tracker links for the ones that lead somewhere.

For gigabit with no fuss, the Intellinet 561068 is the only device in the whole list that is both under 222 mm and ships 10-inch brackets at a price under $80. Sixteen ports, fanless, 9.1 W. It is also 1G-only in 2026, which is the trade.

For MikroTik, the CSS610-8G-2S+ at $119 plus the RMK-2/10 at $9 is the cheapest 10-inch pair with two SFP+ cages, and the CRS310-8G+2S+ at $219 plus the same $9 kit is the managed 2.5G version. MikroTik’s own CRS310 page tells you to buy the kit for 10 inch, which is more than most vendors say; both listings showed single-digit stock when I read them.

For 2.5G PoE on a budget, the GiGaPlus GP-S25-0802P and the YuanLey YS25-0402P are the two fanless boxes the community keeps landing on, with the mounting caveats above: the GiGaPlus needs printed or adjustable ears, and the YuanLey’s ears are a lottery until you open it. Before either, read the 2.5GbE adapter post, because on a Mac mini the switch is not the only thing that has to speak 2.5G.

The QNAPs are the odd family. Every one of the seven is 207 mm, every one ships the wrong ear, and every one has a fan, which in a 10-inch rack on a desk is a different purchase than in a closet. If you want a QNAP, budget the $19 kit and the lead time.

The shelf list, briefly

The ten “fits on a shelf” devices run from 135 mm (UniFi Flex XG, deeper than it is wide) to 236 mm (Netgear GS110EMX). That 236 equals the hole spacing, so it cannot go between the rails; it would have to sit on the cabinet floor, and I could not verify the README’s claim that it fits. The rest are under 215 mm and clear the opening if you accept velcro, which two commenters in issue #2 did with 16-port Tenda and YuLinca switches on the rack floor.

Update, 2026-09-06: the fourth question the rack asks is storage. I ran the same spec-sheet check on 15 NAS units in 10 inch rack NAS: twelve clear the 222 mm rails, but eleven are deeper than the 200 mm T0/T1 shelf, and a 2-bay on a shelf eats 5U.
