The Mac mini that runs this blog has one Ethernet port, and nothing is plugged into it. On 2026-09-07 at 21:03, netstat -ib put en0 at 0 bytes in and 0 bytes out across 9 days and 23 hours of uptime, while the Wi-Fi interface carried 27.9 GB in and 7.0 GB out. Patch panel vs switch: one of them does nothing

A patch panel is a plate with sockets. It has no electronics and connects nothing to anything; each front port is wired straight through to a jack, a punchdown block or a coupler on its back. Its job is to give the cables that arrive at a rack a fixed, labeled place to end, so that the thing you replug is a short patch cord on the front rather than a 20-metre run inside a wall. Every port you use on the panel still needs a switch port on the other end of that cord. Depth is the number a 10-inch buyer needs, because the popular cabinets are 200 mm deep and everything behind the panel, punched-down runs or keystone tails, lives in what is left. Seven listings publish it on the vendor page: NavePoint gives 5.063 in (128.6 mm) for its three shielded punchdown panels and 0.461 in (11.7 mm) for the modular keystone plate; Lanberg gives 130 mm and 0.88 kg for its Cat6 FTP panel with the cable organizer and 32.5 mm and 0.27 kg for the flat Cat5e one; Kenable gives 45 × 255 × 33 mm. The pattern is the useful part: a shielded punchdown panel eats 128 to 130 mm, roughly two thirds of a 200 mm cabinet, before a single cable leaves its back. A keystone plate eats 12 to 33 mm.

Two datasheets that look like they answer the question do not. The LogiLink NP0066 sheet lists a packing dimension of 269 × 108 × 39 mm and a packing weight of 0.65 kg, nothing for the panel itself. The Digitus DN-91612S-EA-G sheet specifies 1.5 mm galvanized steel and Krone LSA+ blocks and then gives only the carton: 26 × 6 × 12 cm, 0.89 kg. Amazon fills the gap for the two Enmane panels with 3.54 in and 4.7 in of depth, but the same table puts the first one at 18.97 in wide, which no 10-inch panel is, so I have coloured both bars orange rather than trust them. Lanberg’s US listing for the Cat5e panel says 23.62 × 23.62 × 33.46 inches. That is a listing, not a patch panel.

0.5U means compact keystones only, and the arithmetic says why

Three of the five half-height panels carry the same warning in their own words. DeskPi’s blank 0.5U plate: “designed for compact RJ45 Ethernet keystone jacks only. It is not a universal keystone panel and may not fit HDMI, USB, fiber, audio, shielded, or oversized tool-less keystone modules.” The asslunade twin gives the cutout size, 0.55 × 0.55 in. A standard keystone module has a face 14.5 mm wide by 16.0 mm high; 0.55 in is 13.97 mm. The face is 2 mm too tall for the hole. A 0.5U slot is 22.2 mm tall, so the height of the unit is not the limit; the panel’s cutout is, and DeskPi sells its own $7.99 jacks to match it. The Amazon summary on the Rapink 1U panel, which is a full-height inline keystone design, still reports “issues with standard keystone jacks” from at least one buyer, so check the module, not the U, before you order 12 of them.

The reasons people give are consistent and small: “To attempt to keep things tidy,” three times in one post, from the owner of two racks in issue #289, who also notes the panel “hides the 2.5Gb Unifi switch that is behind it” and ended up with a spreadsheet of where every port goes. The owner of the 9U UniFi rack in #79 picked Enmane “because of its ratchet-based cable support/strain relief,” and the reply from another builder was a fair question: “Why not route it through the patch panel as well?”

The complaints are about what the panel does to the rest of the rack. In issue #116, swapping a brush plate for the 0.5U panel meant reordering cords: “I ordered a batch of 0.5-foot ones as the 1-foot ones are longer than necessary to go from the switch to the patch panel.” In #198, the panel only fit next to a PDU after its owner “slightly dremeled out the 12 port patch panel so that it fits on that bottom 0.5U.” In #64, a builder who wanted strain relief behind a keystone plate “found no 10" printable cable bars to attach,” which is why the rear bar on the Enmane, Rapink and DeskPi 1U panels gets mentioned as a feature. If I were buying for a 200 mm cabinet and the runs were already terminated in RJ45 plugs, I would take a keystone or coupler plate at 12 to 33 mm deep over a punchdown panel at 130, and I would match the jacks to the cutout before the panel: the DeskPi 0.5U 12-port panel with its own compact jacks, or the Intellinet 714860 ten-port blank if you want standard keystones and a full U. For shielded runs the Rapink 1U Cat6A panel is the one two builders named for its back bar. Whether the runs need Cat6A in the first place is the question I costed separately. None of those three publishes a depth, which after this census I count as a mark against, not a detail.
