My Mac mini sits on a desk. I have no rack, so I have never bought a rack shelf, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. What I did instead, over one afternoon on 2026-09-08, was read every 10-inch rack shelf listing I could reach and normalize the numbers the listings bury: depth, load rating, whether it is vented, which cabinets it is admitted to fit, and the one figure almost nobody prints, the width of the surface you can actually set something on. That last one turned out to be 195 mm on the most common shelf family, and it changes what fits.

This is the eighth post in my 10-inch rack series. The rack dimensions post established the rail opening of about 222 mm and the two cabinet depths, 200 and 260 mm. The NAS post and the Mac mini mount post each used a shelf as a supporting actor. This one is about the shelf itself.

What I collected

Seventeen shelf listings from seven sellers: DeskPi’s Shopify product feed (eleven shelf items, one of which is a 7-inch part I list only to exclude), the GeeekPi versions of the same parts on Amazon, a QiaoYoubang two-pack, Intellinet, Digitus, NavePoint and L-com. I also pulled Tecmojo’s feed, which sells a 10-inch cabinet and nineteen rack shelves, every one of them 19-inch wide. For Amazon listings I read titles, bullet points, stock lines and star counts only; review text is behind a login wall and I did not see it. Owner reports come from the Project Mini Rack issue tracker on GitHub, where a search for “shelf” returns 76 issues, and from two written build logs.

Eleven of the seventeen rows say “not stated” for load. Ten say it for usable surface. The listings compete on colour and ventilation holes; the numbers you would use to decide are mostly missing.

Three depths, and “cantilever” means less than it sounds

The shelves cluster at three depths: 150 mm (Intellinet, Digitus, Stalflex), 200 mm (DeskPi, GeeekPi, QiaoYoubang) and 260 mm (DeskPi’s T2 family). Those last two match the two cabinet depths from the dimensions post exactly, and that is not a coincidence. DeskPi says its 200 mm shelves are “not compatible with T2” and its 260 mm shelves are “incompatible with T0 and T1”. A true cantilever shelf hangs from the front rails and does not care how deep the cabinet is. These do care, because their rear edge is meant to reach the back of the cabinet.

The DP-0056 datasheet shows how (the PDF I read on 2026-09-08 has since gone from wiki.deskpi.com and returns 404 as of 2026-09-10; the shelf’s product page is the live source for the part): step 3 says “For RackMate cabinets, there is no need to install KM3*5 here, the partition can also bear 25kg”, meaning the rear brackets rest on the cabinet’s own partition and are only screwed down in someone else’s rack. A commenter in Project Mini Rack issue #40, a thread about building a rack from aluminium extrusion, put it plainly: “you’d need to match the T0/T1’s depth if you want to use any DeskPi shelves that require reinforced by attachment to the rear rails.” The same commenter guessed the DeskPi depth at “somewhere around 7-8 inches”; the listing says 7.87 inches, which is 200 mm.

The 150 mm shelves are the opposite case. Digitus describes a “simple 2-point attachment to the 254 mm profile rails via integrated mounting brackets with two screw holes each”. That is a front-rail-only mount, which is why it fits a 200 mm cabinet, a 260 mm cabinet or a wall-mount frame with no back at all. You give up 50 mm of depth to get that freedom.

195 mm: the width nobody puts in the title

The rail opening of a 10-inch rack is about 222 mm. Every shelf is narrower than that, because the mounting ears need somewhere to be, and on the DeskPi family the tray sits inset from the ears. The datasheet for the heavy-duty shelf gives the outer footprint as 215 by 202 mm and the raised platform as 195 by 180 mm. That 195 mm is the number behind a complaint in issue #262, where an owner found the DeskPi shelves “are all in-set from the rails, reducing the usable width to <9””. Nine inches is 228 mm; the datasheet says it is worse than that. QiaoYoubang states 210 by 198 mm for its tray and Digitus 210 by 147 mm, so the flat-tray designs give you 15 mm more width than the DeskPi platform.

Every single-board or mini PC I checked fits one per shelf; the second unit of anything wider than 97 mm does not. Two Pi 5 boards are the only side-by-side pair.

What fits on one shelf

I took published dimensions for five devices and set them against the three usable surfaces I could pin down. Mac mini figures are from Apple’s specs page, used in the mount post; the Raspberry Pi 5 is 85 by 56 mm in the product brief; the ASUS NUC 14 Pro is 117 by 112 by 37 mm slim or 54 mm tall; the TP-Link TL-SG108 is 158 by 101 by 25 mm. Two Mac minis would need 254 mm, two NUCs 234 mm, and the rails are 222 mm apart, so the rack, not the shelf, sets the limit at one computer per row. Two Pi 5 boards at 170 mm are the only pair that fits, which is what the SBC shelf is built for; an owner in issue #10 reported the same tray “actually has holes for 2.5” drives and works great” with two drives over USB 3. Height is the other trap: a Mac mini or a tall NUC is over 44.45 mm and takes 2U of rack even on a 0.5U shelf, since 50 plus 22 mm is 72 mm and 1.5U is only 66.7 mm.

Load ratings almost never matter for this class of gear. The heaviest device in the table is the 4 kg APC UPS; a Mac mini is 0.67 kg, a NUC 0.6 kg. The one rating that bites is QiaoYoubang’s 4.5 kg, which that UPS approaches, and which is the only load figure under 20 kg in the whole set. If you are shelving a UPS, buy a shelf that states 25 kg and a depth of 260 mm, and note that Amazon showed the DeskPi heavy-duty T2 version at two units left when I looked.

Vented or solid, and what my desk measurements say

Every shelf that describes its surface calls it vented or perforated, except NavePoint’s, a solid powder-coated plate rated for 20 kg, and it is also the only listing that does not state a height or a depth, so I could not place it in the fit table. Whether solid matters depends on what you set on it. A switch with a fanless top does not care. A Mac mini does, because Apple pulls intake air through the ring around the base and exhausts at the rear underside; the designer of a printed 10-inch Mac mini mount wrote in issue #56 that “with the Mac both intaking and exhausting air out of the same set of vents” some air recirculates. A solid shelf is a desk, and a desk is exactly what I measured in my cooling stand post: on a flat surface this mini idles at 36.9 to 39.5°C with the fan at 999 rpm and climbs to 48.3°C under sustained load, with thermal pressure at zero throughout. Those numbers are what a solid shelf in open air would roughly give you. I have not measured inside a closed cabinet, and I would expect the closed case to be worse.

What owners report going wrong

Which one I would order, by cabinet

This is reasoning from the table, not from use. For a DeskPi T0 or T1, or the Tecmojo 6U, all 200 mm deep, the 0.5U heavy-duty shelf is the only one in that depth whose maker publishes both the platform size and a load figure, and it costs $9 more than the plain 0.5U tray. For a T2, T0 Plus, T1 Plus or TL1, the 260 mm 1U shelf is the matching part. For anything that is not a DeskPi cabinet, or a wall frame with no back, the Intellinet or Digitus 150 mm cantilevers are the ones that attach to the front rails only and state 25 kg; Digitus also states the 210 by 147 mm inside dimension, which is why I would pick it if both are in stock. For two Pi boards, the SBC shelf replaces two generic shelves with one. And if your rack is a Tecmojo, you are buying someone else’s shelf regardless: the maker of the cabinet lists none in 10-inch.

FAQ

Will a 10-inch rack shelf fit any 10-inch rack?

Not automatically. The 150 mm cantilever shelves from Intellinet and Digitus mount to the front rails only and fit any depth. The 200 and 260 mm DeskPi and GeeekPi shelves rest their rear edge on the cabinet and are sold for specific cabinet depths: 200 mm for the T0 and T1, 260 mm for the T2 and Plus models. Check the rail spacing too; one owner’s stage rack was 9.5 inches between rails and the shelves did not fit.

How much weight can a 10-inch rack shelf hold?

Where a rating is published it is 20 to 25 kg: NavePoint 20 kg, and Intellinet, Digitus and the DeskPi heavy-duty shelves 25 kg. The QiaoYoubang tray states 4.5 kg. Eleven of the seventeen listings I checked give no rating at all. A Mac mini is 0.67 kg and a mini PC about 0.6 kg, so the rating only matters for a UPS.

Does a Mac mini fit on a 10-inch rack shelf?

Yes, one per shelf, with 68 mm of width to spare on a DeskPi heavy-duty platform and 83 mm on a Digitus tray. It needs 2U of vertical space because it is 50 mm tall. Two Mac minis need 254 mm and the rails are about 222 mm apart, so a second one does not fit in any 10-inch rack.
