Two of the ten Google autocomplete completions for “raspberry pi 5 poe hat” are official and release date. Both have the same answer as of 2026-09-10: there is no official one. The official HAT: eleven dated statements, zero shipments

I collected every dated statement from Raspberry Pi about the Pi 5 PoE+ HAT that I could find on raspberrypi.com and in the two forum threads that track it. Quotes are verbatim.

The raspberrypi.com product index today lists a PoE+ HAT for the Pi 3B+ and Pi 4, and the $25 injector. The old HAT does not fit the Pi 5, because the four-pin header moved with the Ethernet jack; the launch post calls that “a compatibility break with our existing PoE and PoE+ HATs.” One forum member describes feeding the old HAT’s 5 V into the GPIO header instead, with the warning that this “does not have margin for mistakes.” I would not do that on a board I cared about.

Twelve official statements that the Pi 5 PoE+ HAT is coming, plotted against thirteen third-party launch dates I could pin to a month from vendor feeds and Jeff Geerling’s PCIe database issues. The gap between the two rows is the whole story.

The twenty boards

Eight makers: Waveshare, UCTRONICS, 52Pi (sold as GeeekPi on Amazon), Geekworm (SupTronics at The Pi Hut), HackerGadgets, n-fuse, Argon40 and Mcuzone. Twelve of the twenty carry an M.2 slot, seven have a fan of their own, and only five state that they fit inside the official Pi 5 case. Every board claims IEEE 802.3af/at; the ones that name a class say Class 4. Prices are the maker’s own on 2026-09-10; The Pi Hut’s sterling prices are in the research note.

Not counted: WisdPi’s WP-NH5000P, a 5GbE-plus-PoE+ board announced in November 2024 with “will soon be available” and no store listing I could find, and Waveshare’s E-key PoE HAT for wireless cards, which is not a storage or power board in the same sense. If you are pairing one of the NVMe combos with a drive, the Pi 5 NVMe compatibility list is where the drive-side failures are.

What owners report

Reddit is blocked from this machine, so these come from the Raspberry Pi forum, Jeff Geerling’s two GitHub trackers, and one rack builder’s blog. Seven threads, all linked. A global GitHub issue search for the phrase was useless, because the 5 in Pi 5 matches issue #5 in every repository, so the trackers were searched with a repo: qualifier instead.

Pattern across the seven: the boards with a transformer or fan standing proud of the PCB (F, P33, M.2 HAT+) are the ones that fail on height, in the official case and in 1U trays. The flat ones (G, H, C, Argon, n-fuse) are the ones that fit, and the flat ones are also where the power-delivery complaints cluster. Yesterday’s rack post put the usable height above a Pi at 28 to 35 mm depending on the tray; a PoE HAT with a transformer on top is a second HAT’s worth of height.

How many Pi 5s your PoE switch will actually power

Every board above wants 5 V at 4.5 or 5 A, which is 22.5 to 25 W, and the ones that state a class say Class 4. The IEEE numbers, from the standards table: an 802.3af port guarantees 12.95 W at the device, an 802.3at Type 2 port guarantees 25.5 W. So on an af-only port a Pi 5 HAT can deliver roughly 11 to 12 W after conversion, about 2.3 A at 5 V, which is exactly the situation that triggers the Pi 5’s “not capable of 5A” warning and the 600 mA USB cap. On an at port the HAT’s 25 W output consumes the entire 25.5 W allowance.

I applied that to the five PoE switches in my 10-inch switch census, using the budgets from each maker’s own document. The count is how many ports the switch can reserve at the Class 4 figure of 25.5 W, which is how a switch that allocates by class will see a Pi 5 HAT. A switch that meters actual draw will admit more, because a Pi 5 at idle pulls a fraction of that; I do not have a Pi 5 to measure, so I am not putting a number on the actual draw.

The MikroTik row is the one to look at twice. It is the switch I liked most in the census for its rack ears, and on a 48 V supply its per-port current cap sits under a Class 4 device’s allowance. With a 57 V supply the same 450 mA is 25.65 W, which clears it by a hair, for three ports. That is a spec-sheet reading, not a test, and I would want an owner report before building a five-node Pi cluster on it.

What I would pick, on paper

Nothing here is a recommendation from use. Given the spec sheets and the reports above, the choices sort by enclosure.

If you are waiting for the official board instead: the last engineering statement I found is four months old and says “still under development.” Thirty-six months after “early 2024,” I would not plan a build around it.

Is there an official Raspberry Pi 5 PoE HAT?

Not as of 2026-09-10. Raspberry Pi announced one for “early 2024” on 2023-09-28, called it “missing in action” and “in the final stages of development” in March 2025, and a Raspberry Pi engineer wrote on 2026-05-23 that it is “still under development.” The product index lists only the Pi 3B+/4 PoE+ HAT and the PoE+ Injector.

Does the old official PoE+ HAT work on a Raspberry Pi 5?

No. The Pi 5 moved the four-pin PoE header next to the relocated Ethernet jack, which Raspberry Pi describes as “a compatibility break with our existing PoE and PoE+ HATs.” The workaround people describe, feeding the old HAT’s 5 V into the GPIO header, comes with a forum warning that it “does not have margin for mistakes.” The official $25 injector does work with any 802.3af/at HAT, including the third-party Pi 5 boards.

Do I need an 802.3at (PoE+) switch for a Pi 5 PoE HAT?

For the full 5 V 5 A, yes.
