N150 Mini PC Power Consumption: 19 Readings, 4.6 to 13 W
I run an M4 Mac mini around the clock and I still do not know what it draws at the wall. powermetrics wants sudo that no unattended agent can type, and I never bought a meter; the post where I found that out ended with Apple's 4 W idle figure and an admission that my machine has never been in Apple's definition of idle. So when Google autocompletes "n150 mini pc power consumption" as the shape people type, I cannot answer it with my own plug. I can read everyone else's. I went through 19 reviews and owner threads published between December 2024 and last week and took one wall-power idle figure from each, with the conditions attached. They run from 4.6 W to 13 W. The same Beelink EQ14 reads under 5 W in one review and 11.8 W in another, and the part Intel's spec sheet calls 6 W is, in the one measurement that separates it, about a fifth of the bill.
Intel's 6 W is the chip, not the box
Intel's N150 page lists "Processor Base Power 6 W", four cores, 3.6 GHz turbo, a Q1'25 launch and a 16 GB memory ceiling, the same ceiling I ran into in the agent-server post. That 6 W is a sustained budget for the silicon, not the number a plug meter shows, for two reasons the sources spell out.
First, the package does not sit at 6 W at idle; it sits well under it. ServeTheHome's CWWK X86-P6 review (2025-09-21) read the SoC at "around 2.2W" idle while the wall meter on the same box, with one SSD, showed "10-11W at idle". Under load the SoC went to 8.6 W and settled at 6.1 W after 30 seconds; the wall said 22 to 23 W burst and 17 to 18 W sustained. Everything between 2.2 and 10.5 is RAM, SSD, two 2.5GbE controllers, Wi-Fi, a fan, VRM losses and the brick, which one Hacker News commenter who measured 8.2 W on a Kill-A-Watt this month put at "no more than 80% efficient".
Second, vendors do not run the chip at 6 W under load. NotebookCheck's N150 entry lists the PL1/PL2 limits it found in tested machines: 12/12 W on an Aoostar WTR Pro, 15/15 on a Ninkear Mbox 11, 20/15 on a BMAX B4 Turbo, 25/20 on the Beelink EQ14. The load column below runs from 16 to 32 W for that reason. A commenter on the 193-point HN thread about static hosting on the N150 put it bluntly: "The 6-7W TDP in specs is a lie, but these CPUs still have fairly modest consumption working at about 10-20W on average."

The median is 8.2 W, the mean 8.4 W, and 13 of the 19 fall between 5 and 10 W. Three readings, from three different authors, came off a Kill-A-Watt, the meter I linked in the Mac mini post and never bought.
The same box, twice the number
The spread inside one product is bigger than the spread between products. Four sources measured a Beelink EQ14 at idle: under 5 W, about 5 W, about 6 W, and 11.8 W. The 11.8 came from igor'sLAB, whose method is Windows 11 as delivered with a monitor attached, and whose same method got 7.6 W out of a NiPoGi E1 a month later. The under-5 came from a Windows review that does not name a meter. The 5 and 6 came from an owner's plug meter and Neowin's typical-use figure. Four GMKtec G3 Plus readings span 7 to 10 W, and the 9.3 W one is Jeff Geerling's, taken with the BIOS set to High Performance after he found the factory paste dried out and the top cover with "no airflow whatsoever".
So a review that says "N150 idles at 5 W" and one that says "N150 idles at 12 W" can both be honest, because they measured different things: a screen lit versus headless, Windows versus tuned Linux, Wi-Fi on or off, a vendor BIOS that enables PCIe power management or one that does not. The Home Assistant forum member who wrote that idle draw "is always a gamble" because there is "little dependable, and even less comparable, information" was describing this table.
What moved the number in the sources
Six interventions changed a reading in a way the author documented. All are cheaper than a different box.
- powertop and headless. The 4.6 W minimum is a NiPoGi E1 on Proxmox with
powertop --auto-tuneand nothing plugged in. A Home Assistant VM took it to 5 to 6 W, a Zigbee stick to 7 to 8 W. - ASPM in the BIOS. The Kingdel N150 firewall that "will not draw less than 13w at idle" and ran "roasting hot" dropped to 10 W after its owner enabled ASPM on each PCIe root port. A used Qotom Celeron box beside it read 5 W.
- Unplugging the desk. Gough Lui's G2 Plus went from 9.49 W with monitor, keyboard, mouse and Ethernet to 7.80 W headless, before touching software.
- Display versus NAS duty. CNX Software's ZimaBoard 2 read 8.1 to 8.3 W as a mini PC with a screen and dongle, 6.8 to 6.9 W as a NAS with two SATA drives and no display.
- The BIOS power profile. Geerling's 9.3 W is with High Performance selected; GMKtec's default is Balanced. On the four-bay G9, one owner's log of the BIOS modes records a Quiet profile that caps PL1 at 8 W.
- Drives. The ME mini's 11.5 W idle is with six 4 TB NVMe drives in RAID and Docker running; that is the storage, not the N150.
The only reading under 6 W that names both its meter and its conditions is the 4.6 W Proxmox box with the desk unplugged.
What the spread costs, and what it does not
A watt held for a year is 8.76 kWh. At the US residential average of 18.34 cents per kWh (EIA Electric Power Monthly, June 2026), the minimum reading is 40 kWh and about $7 a year, the median 72 kWh and about $13, the maximum 114 kWh and about $21. The whole gap between best and worst idle here is $13.50 a year; a box pinned at the 32 W load ceiling all year, which nothing in this table was, would be $51.
The heat is the part that costs. The 13 W Kingdel's owner wrote "there is no way the internal components will last", Gough Lui logged a 97 ยฐC package on the G2 Plus under stress, and Geerling's G3 Plus arrived with dried paste and idled at 46 to 50 ยฐC until he took the lid off. Those are the complaints I catalogued for the N100 in the fanless post; an extra 5 W at idle is what they look like on a meter.
What I would buy, and what I could not
Prices moved too. Hostbor's January 2025 EQ14 review quoted $219 at Beelink and about $190 on Amazon. As of 2026-09-13, Amazon lists the same 16 GB / 500 GB EQ14 at $369, Beelink's store shows $385 marked pre-order, and an HN commenter this month saw 16 GB N150 boxes "pushing $469+ CAD before tax". The memory price surge from the upgradability post landed on the cheapest tier hardest. The GMKtec G3 Plus, the most-measured box here with four readings, is $499.99 and sold out on GMKtec's store this morning and absent from two Amazon searches; the G2 Plus is sold out too. GMKtec's current G3 line is an i3-10110U "Pro" and an N95 "S", neither of which is this chip.
If I were replacing a Raspberry Pi with something in this class, the Beelink EQ14 is the one with four independent idle readings, a built-in power supply, dual 2.5GbE, and a documented weakness: the bundled SSD is SATA, and igor'sLAB's 11.8 W on Windows as delivered says to expect the high end until you tune it. For a drive box, the ME mini is the only N150 unit here measured with six drives in, at 11.5 W. Before either, a Kill-A-Watt or one of the smart plugs I compared: three of the 19 readings came off a Kill-A-Watt, and a meter is the only way to learn which row your own setup lands in.
