Are Mini PCs Upgradable? 24 Spec Sheets, 8 Solder the RAM
The question has a yes-or-no shape and the spec sheets do not. I run this site on a Mac mini M4 with 16 GB that cannot take a stick of anything, a choice I have second-guessed in writing more than once, so before answering for the machines I do not own I pulled the memory and storage lines from 24 mini PC spec pages on 2026-09-05: seven Beelink, six GMKtec, five Minisforum, three ACEMAGIC, one Kamrui, one Lenovo PSREF PDF and Apple. Sixteen of the 24 take SO-DIMMs. Eight solder the memory to the board. Every one of the 24 has at least one M.2 slot for storage. So the storage half of the question is a yes, and the memory half depends on which end of the price list you are shopping.
What 24 spec sheets say
The rows come from the vendors' own product pages, fetched the same morning, with the Lenovo row from the PSREF sheet dated June 9, 2026 and the Apple row from the Mac mini specs page. Bold in the slots column marks the boards where the memory is fixed at order time.

The split is not random. The soldered boards are at the two ends of the price list: the cheapest NAS-style box and the premium tier. Beelink's ME mini, a six-slot storage box built around an N95 or N150, solders 16 GB of LPDDR5-4800 and lists from $269. From about $590 up, every soldered entry is a machine whose selling point is the chip: Lunar Lake in the GMKtec K13, Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 in the EVO-X1, Ryzen AI Max+ 395 in the EVO-X2 and the GTR9 Pro, and the H 255 in the SER9 Pro. Those processors are sold with LPDDR5X for bandwidth, and LPDDR5X has no socket. The middle of the list, Ryzen 7 and 9 HS parts, Intel H parts, the Core Ultra 9 285H and the business-desktop Lenovo, is two SO-DIMM slots almost without exception.
One brand illustrates the drift. On Hacker News in September 2025 a commenter pointed at the Beelink SER8 as "a unified AMD with an NPU, and socketed ram" and added that "the newer ones have soldered ram." In January 2026 another wrote "some of the recent Beelink ones have soldered ram though." The table agrees: SER8 socketed, SER9 Pro soldered, GTR9 Pro soldered. The model number went up by one and the socket went away.
The same chip gets three different ceilings
The second thing the table shows is that "maximum memory" is a number the vendor chooses, and the same silicon gets different numbers depending on who is writing the page. The Ryzen 7 8845HS in the Beelink SER8 is listed at 256 GB. The same 8845HS in the GMKtec K8 Plus is listed at 96 GB, and Minisforum's UM890 Pro with the 8945HS says 96 GB and 48 GB per stick. AMD's product page gives the 8845HS a maximum of 256 GB across two channels, which is where Beelink's figure comes from. It is the memory controller's limit, not a configuration anyone has installed in that chassis: the largest DDR5 SO-DIMM Crucial sells is the 64 GB CT64G56C46S5, and two slots times 64 GB is 128 GB. Between 128 and 256 there is no module to buy.
Intel's N150 goes the other way. Intel's spec page says 16 GB maximum, one channel. Beelink's EQ14, ACEMAGIC's V1 and Kamrui's AK1 Plus copy the 16. GMKtec's G3 Plus, on the identical N150 with the identical single DDR4 slot, says 32 GB. Owners have been past both for years. A commenter in July 2024 wrote that single-socket Alder Lake N boxes "are limited to 48 GB (which works, despite Ark advertising a limit of only 16 GB)." In March 2026 someone described two N100 boxes "both retrofitted with 32GB of RAM" running a Kubernetes cluster under a television. A July 2025 recommendation was an N100, N150 or N305 "with 32GB RAM" and, in the same sentence, a warning that from the N150 on "you will need active cooling," which matches what I found when I measured a fanless N100 settling near 1.2 GHz. The 257-comment thread I quoted in an earlier post has the same picture with the qualifier attached: 32 GB works, 48 GB is "hit & miss."
Minisforum manages to disagree with itself on one page. The AI X1 Pro-370 page says "Up to 128GB" in the marketing copy and "DDR5(SO-DIMMx2) 5600MT/s, max, 96GB" in the spec block. ACEMAGIC's F5A, on the HX 370, says 128 GB; Beelink's SER9 line, on the neighbouring H 255, solders 24 or 32 GB and offers nothing above. Lenovo is the only vendor of the seven that says what its number means. The M75q Gen 2 sheet lists 64 GB and footnotes it: "The max memory is based on the test results with current Lenovo memory offerings." That footnote is the honest version of every ceiling in the table. The chip maker's number is what the controller can address. The vendor's number is what the vendor tested, or copied. Neither is a promise about the stick you are about to buy.
Same name, different board
The trap that would have caught me is on the ACEMAGIC F5A page. It sells two builds under one product name. Pick the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and the spec block reads "DDR5 SO-DIMM Slot×2, Up to 128GB." Pick the Ryzen 7 H 255 variant from the same drop-down and the configuration reads "24GB LPDDR5 + 1TB SSD," which is soldered memory with no slot at all. Nothing in the product title distinguishes them. The Beelink SER8 to SER9 Pro step is the same pattern across a generation: same case family, same two M.2 slots, socket gone. Reading "expandable RAM and storage" in a headline tells you nothing; the words to search the page for are SO-DIMM, SODIMM, soldered, on-board and on-package. If none of them appear, the vendor is describing the SSD.
Owners also report that a socket is not the same as compatibility. A review on the F5A product page, from a buyer of the HX 370 barebone, says the machine "would not post with Kingston Fury memory, but up and running once I switched over to Crucial memory." The vendor's own compatibility note on that page names Samsung, Kingston, Crucial, Adata and Phison as the brands it tests with, which does not stop a Kingston kit from failing. I have no way to check whose fault that was; I am reporting it because a no-POST after a memory upgrade is the failure mode people return machines over.
What the upgrade costs at checkout, and later
On a soldered board the memory decision is made once, at checkout, and the vendor prices it accordingly. Beelink lists the SER9 Pro at $699 with 24 GB and $779 with 32 GB, so the last 8 GB you will ever have in that machine costs $80, or $10 a gigabyte. On the socketed SER8 the same 24-to-32 step is $799 to $939, $140, or $17.50 a gigabyte, but that machine will take a second pair of sticks later. Minisforum's UM890 Pro goes from $975 at 32 GB to $1,319 at 64 GB, $10.75 a gigabyte; the AI X1 Pro from $1,179 to $1,535 for the same step, $11.13 a gigabyte. All four figures are the vendor stores as of 2026-09-05.
Those per-gigabyte prices are close to what owners say retail costs right now. In June 2026 a Minisforum owner wrote that the "64 gigs of DDR5 sticks" in the two SO-DIMM slots "cost me over $600," about $9.40 a gigabyte, and that the BIOS lets the system and GPU split be chosen afterwards. The same month another commenter noticed that an N150 box with 12 GB soldered had gone up in price since the previous year "as a result of the RAM price surge," even though what is soldered on it "is probably the cheapest possible" DDR4. I cannot quote Amazon prices here because the listings render in Korean won from this machine, so I have not compared vendor and retail directly. What the numbers do say is that in a rising memory market the socketed board's advantage is not a cheaper upgrade. It is that the upgrade can happen after the price moves, and after you know what the workload actually uses, which on my own server turned out to be a different number than the guides had told me.
The rule I would apply
If the machine is going to run one workload for years and you already know its memory footprint, a soldered box with the right amount is fine, and the LPDDR5X models are the ones with the bandwidth. That is the argument for the Mac mini I am on, and it holds only because I measured first. If the workload is going to change, or you are buying below the ceiling to save money now, buy from the middle of the table: two SO-DIMM slots, DDR5-5600, a vendor ceiling of 96 or 128 GB, and a barebone option so the memory you install is the memory you chose. For the N-series boxes, treat Intel's 16 GB as a formality that three owner reports and one vendor page contradict, and treat 32 GB in the single slot as the tested-by-strangers configuration rather than the guaranteed one.
On the module side, the one brand an owner on the F5A page reported working after a Kingston kit did not is Crucial, and Crucial's own site is where the 64 GB SO-DIMM ceiling above comes from. For a two-slot DDR5 box the matching parts are a pair of the 32 GB DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM CT32G56C46S5, or the 64 GB kit of two 32 GB DDR5-4800 modules where the board's listed speed does not matter to you. For the DDR4 two-slot machines, the Lenovo M75q Gen 2 or Beelink's EQR5, the 32 GB kit of two 16 GB DDR4-3200 SO-DIMMs fills both slots to half their ceiling. The single-slot N150 boxes take one DDR4 stick, not a pair, so a kit is the wrong purchase there. I have installed none of these; they are the modules whose part numbers match the spec lines above.
Update (2026-09-06): the vendor catalogues in this table came from each store's /products.json. FAQ
Are mini PCs upgradable?
Storage, almost always: all 24 spec sheets I read list at least one M.2 slot. Memory, usually but not at the price extremes: 16 of 24 take SO-DIMM modules, while the cheapest NAS-style N150 box and the premium LPDDR5X machines (Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, Ryzen AI Max+ 395, Core Ultra 200V, Apple M4) solder it. Search the spec page for SO-DIMM or soldered before buying.
How much RAM can an N100 or N150 mini PC take?
Intel's specification says 16 GB on one channel. Vendor pages for the same chip say 16 GB (Beelink, ACEMAGIC, Kamrui) or 32 GB (GMKtec). Owners on Hacker News report 32 GB working routinely in the single slot and 48 GB working for some but not all. Anything over 16 GB is outside Intel's spec, so buy the module from somewhere with returns.
Is a mini PC with soldered RAM a bad buy?
Not if the amount is right for a workload you have measured, and the soldered LPDDR5X boards are the ones with the higher memory bandwidth. The cost is that the decision is final: Beelink charges $80 for the 24-to-32 GB step on the SER9 Pro and offers nothing above 32 GB, and if the workload grows the whole machine is replaced. A two-slot board lets you buy under the ceiling now and fill it after prices or needs move.
