I set out to rank portable SSDs for the Mac mini that runs this business, and I never got to the drives. The ranking fell apart on the first measurement, because this machine does not have a storage ceiling. It has two, they differ by 4Γ—, and which one you get is decided by which hole you plug into.

Every roundup I read treats the Mac mini as a single host with a single speed, and then ranks drives by a number most of them cannot deliver at the port you will actually use. So I stopped ranking drives and went and enumerated the machine.

What I measured on this machine

Three Thunderbolt buses at 40 Gb/s. One built-in USB3 hub at exactly 10 Gb/s. That maps cleanly onto what Apple publishes for the Mac mini: the front is Two USB-C ports with support for USB 3 (up to 10Gb/s), the back is Three Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) ports at 40 Gb/s. On an M4 Pro the back is Thunderbolt 5 at 120 Gb/s, which makes the front-to-back gap 12Γ—.

Enumerated on my own Mac mini (Mac16,10, macOS 26.4.1): three Thunderbolt buses report 40 Gb/s, while a single built-in USB3 hub reports 10 Gb/s. The front-port figure is Apple's published spec for the two front USB-C ports.

Then I normalised what the vendors actually promise

I read first-party spec pages and datasheets for seven drives across four vendors on 2026-08-17 β€” three vendors that sell a matched pair (one 10 Gb/s drive, one 20 Gb/s drive), plus one Thunderbolt drive. That collection scope is the evidence here, so here it is in full.

SanDisk is missing on purpose. The Extreme and Extreme PRO product pages render their specs in JavaScript, and a plain fetch returned 78,990 and 88,307 bytes with the interface string appearing zero times. I could not get a first-party number, so the drive does not go in my table.

Three of the seven advertise a figure no Mac has ever reached. All three list Mac or macOS as compatible.

The one qualifier any vendor prints names the wrong thing

Exactly one page in the set qualifies the claim, and it points at the connector instead of the controller. Footnote 3 on the Crucial X10 Pro page:

USB 3.2 Gen2 2x2 full performance can only be achieved on USB-C host devices.

Every port on a Mac mini is USB-C. Both front ports, all three back ports. Follow that footnote literally and the machine qualifies β€” and it still will not do 20 Gb/s, because the actual requirement is a Gen 2x2 host controller, which Apple does not ship. The marketing bullet higher up the same page reads Compatible: Windows, Mac, Android, iPad, PC, Linux and more. The Crucial X9 Pro page, which has nothing to downgrade, contains no such footnote at all.

Kingston does the same thing one layer down. The XS2000 datasheet lists macOS (v.10.14.x +) under compatibility, then defers in footnote 5: compatibility is largely dependent on the host software/hardware (please see your host manufacturers support site for capabilities). The XS1000 datasheet needs no such deferral, because a 10 Gb/s drive on a 10 Gb/s port has nothing to lose.

What owners actually get

Three independent reports converge, which is the part that convinced me. On Apple Discussions, AdmiralShane bought a T9 4TB expecting up to 2000 Mb/second and measured a little over 960 MB per second. On MacRumors, chfilm got 900 MB/s on an M4 Max, and an OWC staff account replied bluntly: FYI M4 machines do not have USB 3.2 gen 2x2. Larry Jordan benchmarked a T9 on an M4 Pro Mac mini specifically at about 950 MB/s, and concluded: avoid USB-C 3.2 Gen 2Γ—2 as it is not supported on Macs.

960, 900, 950. That is the 10 Gb/s link, three times over.

The one workaround in that MacRumors thread is worth knowing about and not worth doing: joevt reached 20 Gb/s by putting an ASMedia ASM3242 card in a Thunderbolt 3 expansion chassis β€” and immediately noted I did not run tests for an Apple Silicon Mac though. Just Intel Mac. chfilm's reply is the correct conclusion: Sigh, I guess it will be cheaper to just buy new ssds!

The failures are not all interface-related, either. In a Tom's Hardware thread on T9 write speed, dresoccer4 reported a shocking 50MB/s writes, and a Mac user posting as goatea reported writes of 2MB / second. Those are broken-drive numbers, not port numbers. Buying the right tier does not exempt you from a bad unit.

So: which one

The ranking rule falls out of the port, not the drive.

If the drive lives on a front port, the 20 Gb/s tier buys you nothing. Within each vendor's matched pair the two products perform identically at 10 Gb/s, so buy the cheaper half. That is the Crucial X9 Pro for plain desk storage, or the Samsung T7 Shield if it travels and the IP65 rating matters. If you genuinely need more than ~1,000 MB/s, the answer is Thunderbolt or USB4, and it has to go in the back. The OWC Envoy Pro FX is the clean example β€” its own product title prints the whole lesson of this article, Thunderbolt 40Gb/s + USB-C 10Gb/s. Same drive, two speeds, decided by the socket.

If it is a Time Machine or backup target, stop reading speed rows. After the first full backup the hourly increments are tiny, and I argued the sizing case in the Time Machine drive post. Pick on warranty structure instead β€” and the structures differ more than the speeds do. Samsung's statement is time-only, with no byte clause anywhere in it. Crucial's five years ends at a published TBW that is not actually published anywhere. Kingston's ends when a wear meter hits 100, and the tool that reads that meter is Windows-only β€” the drive is Mac-compatible, the warranty meter is not. If you want the longer Samsung coverage, the T9 carries five years to the T7 Shield's three; just buy it for the warranty, not the 2,000 MB/s.
