Structure one: the clock is the only clock

Samsung’s Portable SSD Full Warranty Statement extracts to 8,425 characters of text, and searching it for TBW, bytes written, endurance, and wear returns zero hits for each. What it has instead is a table: three years for the T7, T7 Shield, and T5 EVO, five years for the T9, and one year for the cable in the box, a line item I did not expect to find. Write as much as you want; only the calendar ends this warranty.

Seagate’s retail limited warranty, which covers the LaCie line, also contains no byte clause, though it does tell you to check the warranty site to “determine whether there are any usage-based limitations,” so the door is held ajar. The LaCie Rugged SSD runs five years and is the only drive in this survey whose warranty includes a data recovery service: one in-lab attempt under Rescue, not available in every country. Current SanDisk Extreme portables (SDSSDE61 and later, plus the Extreme PRO line) are five years, the older SDSSDE60 three, and the portable warranty page carries no endurance language either.

Structure two: a cap pointing at a number that is not published

Crucial’s current portable drives all carry the same footnote. From the X10 Pro datasheet, footnote 9: “Warranty valid for 5 years from the original date of purchase by an authorized seller, or before writing the maximum total bytes written (TBW) as published in the product datasheet and as measured in the product’s SMART data, whichever comes first.”

I searched each sheet for that published number. The X10 Pro datasheet contains exactly one occurrence of TBW: the footnote itself. Same for the X9 datasheet (which pairs the clause with a three-year term, not five) and for the X9 Pro for Mac flyer. None of the three spec tables has an endurance row; the X10 Pro table does not even list sequential write speed. The warranty ends at a number “as published in the product datasheet,” and the datasheet does not publish it.

The X9 Pro for Mac flyer is the sharpest version of this. Footnote 8 names Time Machine as a supported use. Footnote 7 is the byte cap. A drive marketed for hourly, always-on backup ships with a warranty that counts writes against an undisclosed ceiling.

Structure three: a real meter, readable on the wrong OS

Kingston is the honest implementation of the same idea, with one catch. The August 2025 warranty statement has a “5 Year Conditional Warranty Table (External/Portable SSD)” listing the XS2000, XS1000, and XS1000R, and the condition is mechanical: coverage ends at five years or “when the usage of an NVME SSD as indicated by Kingston’s implementation of the Health attribute ‘Percentage Used’ reaches or exceeds a normalised value of one hundred (100).” Unlike Crucial, you can watch this meter move. The XS1000 datasheet says where: “SSD Life Remaining… can be found using the Kingston SSD Manager.”

Then the catch. The Kingston SSD Manager user guide lists supported operating systems: Windows 8 through 11, full stop, with “Administrator privileges in Windows” as a requirement. The words macOS and Linux do not appear anywhere in its 8,430 characters. The XS1000 datasheet, one line above the warranty footnote, lists compatibility with “Windows 11, 10, macOS (v.10.15.x +), Linux, Chrome OS, Android, iOS/iPadOS.” The drive is sold as Mac-compatible; the meter that ends its warranty is not.

It does not have to work this way, and SanDisk proves it in-house. Their internal SSD endurance page runs the same whichever-comes-first regime but publishes the actual numbers per model and capacity: 300 TBW for a 500GB Extreme NVMe, 600 TBW for a 4TB Ultra 3D. The byte cap can be printed. On the portable side of the catalog, no vendor prints it.

The meter problem on a Mac

Both byte-capped warranties measure the cap “in the product’s SMART data.” On this machine, macOS reports the internal Apple SSD’s health as one word: S.M.A.R.T. status: Verified, with no wear counters exposed, a limitation I measured in the July post and re-checked today. For external USB drives there is no built-in SMART reporting at all; third-party tools depend on the enclosure bridge cooperating. So a Mac user who wants to know their position relative to a Crucial cap has no stock instrument, and one who wants to read Kingston’s meter needs to borrow a Windows machine. At claim time, the vendor reads the counter and you find out where you stood.

What a warranty buys when the drive actually dies

Three owner threads, read in full, put a floor under all of this. On Tom’s Hardware, an XS2000 owner tried five cables, several laptops, and three operating systems against a drive whose indicator light no longer turns on; the drive was out of warranty, and the forum’s answer was that professional recovery might cost “a few hundred $$$” with no guarantee. On Hacker News, a thread titled “We just lost 3TB of data on a SanDisk Extreme SSD” collected more of the same, including a commenter who “lost 1TB on such a SSD I hardly used.” And in an AnandTech forum PSA, a member quoted a data recovery professional seeing those SanDisk drives “3-4 a week… PMIC failures, firmware issues are very common.” SanDisk’s failure wave is also the subject of ongoing litigation I covered in the July post, and the standard remedy across every brand here is the same: an in-warranty claim replaces the drive. Except for LaCie’s one Rescue attempt, nobody’s warranty recovers data, which matters twice over when the product you are buying is the backup.

What this does to my shortlist

For a 24/7 Time Machine target, I want the warranty structure that cannot argue with me: calendar-only. My July pick, the Samsung T7 Shield 2TB, survives this pass; its three years are unconditional. The drive this dataset promotes is the Samsung T9 2TB: five years, no byte clause, from the vendor whose warranty statement does not contain the word wear. One honest caveat from the USB naming maze: the T9 is a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 drive, and its 2,000MB/s headline is unreachable on any Mac, which tops out at 10Gb/s on USB. On a Mac you are buying the T9 for the two extra warranty years, not the speed.

To be fair to the capped drives: a nightly-backup workload writes little enough that a plausible TBW ceiling on a 1TB-class drive probably sits decades out, and I have no evidence Crucial or Kingston enforce these clauses aggressively. But I cannot do that math for a drive whose ceiling is unpublished, and that inability is the finding. A warranty term I cannot compute my position against is worth less than the same number of years without the clause.
