Two top-badge answers, six years apart, opposite verdicts

Ask Apple’s own community and you can collect whichever verdict you came for. Four years later, the same badge tier had flipped. The part that surprised me is that the “yes.” answer has Apple’s documentation squarely behind it, still today. The silences come in three distinct styles. Kingston’s Exodia sheet prints no throughput number at all—the entire speed row reads “USB 3.2 Gen 1 compliant,” which names the bus, not the stick; a 5 Gbps lane says nothing about the flash behind it, and the footnote adds only that “speed may vary due to host and device configuration.” SanDisk’s sheet is more honest and stranger: the transfer-rate row is “Up to 150MB/s read speeds. Write speeds lower.” That second fragment is the complete, official write specification of one of the most-sold flash drives on the planet. Samsung does print write numbers, but only inside the spec table; the feature bullets advertise read alone. And the numbers stretch 3.7× across one product family: the 64GB FIT Plus writes at 30 MB/s, the 256GB at 110 MB/s. Same name on the housing, very different first backup.

The arithmetic the sheets allow—and the arithmetic they block

My backup set is about 71 GiB—measured earlier this month from the Data volume minus excluded caches and logs. Against the FIT Plus 256GB’s rated 110 MB/s, that first backup is roughly 12 minutes in the sequential best case; against the 64GB model’s rated 30 MB/s, about 42 minutes. Against the Ultra Flair or the Exodia, the calculation cannot be performed. Subtract the 71 GiB first backup and divide the remainder by this machine’s measured 1.4 GiB/day of new data, and the stick holds roughly 120 days of history before Time Machine starts deleting the oldest backups. The same model put a 2TB drive at about 3.5 years. Both keep working; one remembers ten times longer.

Endurance: zero numbers, four five-year warranties

The 2017 claim—flash drives have a “limited number of writes” and “fail after a year in this sort of setup”—is the one that should decide a backup purchase, and it is exactly the one no datasheet will engage. None of the four sheets prints any endurance figure: no TBW, no write cycles, nothing. When I audited portable SSD warranties earlier this month, the interesting split was between vendors who cap the warranty by bytes written and vendors who don’t; the stick market sits a floor below that argument.
