I run this business on a Mac mini that has been up for 2 days 23:26 as I write this, and it still has no backup: tmutil destinationinfo answers No destinations configured, as it has every time I have checked since July. The shortlist has been two drives for weeks, the Samsung T9 2TB and the Crucial X9 Pro 2TB, and I own neither — every hardware claim below is a vendor document or another owner's report.

On paper they are hard to separate for my case. The T9 is rated at USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, but a Mac does not speak Gen 2x2, so it drops to the 10Gb/s the X9 Pro is rated at to begin with. So I read the warranties instead, and that is where the two stop looking alike.

One footnote, three references, two of them empty

Crucial prints the same sentence on the X9 Pro product page and on both flyers. It is footnote 9 on the official flyer, which is the file Crucial's own X9 Pro support page links as the datasheet:

Warranty valid for 5 years from the original date of purchase by an authorized seller, or before writing the maximum total bytes written (TBW) as published in the product datasheet and as measured in the product's SMART data, whichever comes first.

That sentence points at two things outside itself: the limit is as published in the product datasheet, and the measurement is as measured in the product's SMART data. Anyone who wants to know how long the warranty really lasts has to follow both pointers.

The first one leads back into the file the footnote appears in. That flyer is 2 pages and 5,882 characters of extracted text, and the string TBW occurs in it exactly once — the footnote quoting itself. Searching for any number attached to TB returns three hits, 1TB, 2TB and 4TB, which are the capacities. The words endurance, lifespan and wear appear zero times each, and the X9 Pro 2TB product page has the same shape: 40,598 characters, four TBW hits, all of them the footnote.

That gap is old. Jon L. Jacobi flagged it for PCWorld on 2023-08-22, writing that the drive "doesn't provide TBW (terabytes that can be written) ratings, which are often the mitigating factor in warranty claims." Three years on, the flyer is still silent, while a third-party comparison site prints "Endurance (TBW): 440 TB" for the 1TB model with no source cited anywhere on the page.

The second pointer is what changed my mind

I wrote that half up on 2026-08-05, when I sorted five vendors by how their warranties terminate, and I assumed the missing figure was the whole problem. The measurement clause turned out to matter more: Crucial sells a SKU called X9 Pro for Mac while naming a meter its own software cannot read on a Mac.

The X9 Pro for Mac support page is 2,122 characters end to end. It lists exactly one utility and describes it like this: "Storage Executive optimizes and updates your Crucial SSDs on Microsoft Windows computers." Under firmware it says "No firmware updates at this time." That is the entire tooling offer for the Mac-branded drive, so I pulled the Storage Executive page to check whether the wording was merely careless. In 33,466 characters the strings macOS and Mac each occur zero times, and the table headed "Operating system" has three rows: Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 7.

The Samsung warranty ends on a date. The Crucial warranty ends on a date or on a byte count, and both references that byte count depends on came back empty when I followed them on 2026-08-13.

The Mac gap is a missed commitment rather than an oversight. Footnote 7 of the X9 Pro datasheet reads: "Crucial Portable SSD Utility application for Windows and macOS launching September 2023." That utility exists, offered on the general support page as "Crucial Portable SSD Utility Software Version 0.2.0 for Windows", and it is Windows only nearly three years past that date. It would not help anyway, since its stated job is password lock and LED control rather than health reporting.

The host side does not fill the gap: on this machine, macOS 26.4.1 build 25E253, which smartctl comes back empty, because macOS ships no smartmontools. For the internal disk, diskutil info disk0 reports SMART Status: Verified and nothing else — one word, no counters, and for USB storage not even that.

The firmware asymmetry runs the same direction

The two support pages disagree about whether firmware exists, and both answers are inconvenient for a Mac owner. The plain X9 Pro page currently says "A new firmware is available. Please download Crucial Storage Executive below to update your device with the latest firmware", naming the Windows-only tool; the Mac SKU page says there are no firmware updates at all.

That matters because owners have been waiting on firmware for this drive. On Tom's Hardware, universalrule reported on 2024-04-06 that an X9 Pro 4TB "had disconnection issue since the first time I used it. I usually backup once a month, and every time I use it, it disconnects at least once", adding "I checked the Micron website and there is still no firmware available." The thread closed without a fix. Firmware exists now, and a Mac owner with that symptom would have to borrow a Windows PC to apply it.

Mac-side failures look similar. In Apple's own forum, SJLM1969 described an X9 Pro for Mac on an M3 iMac running Sequoia 15.5: "Within 5 minutes, both Finder & Time Machine tell me that it is inaccessible and improperly ejected", with First Aid returning File system verify or repair failed. : (-69845). The thread ends on 2025-07-21 with the owner heading for a replacement.

Samsung is not clean either. Owners on MacRumors watched T7 Shield throughput collapse from 600-800 MB/s to 3-6 MB/s after Sequoia 15.2, one of them switching to a Crucial X9 over it, and T9 owners have hit that same -69845 code on a full exFAT volume, which I covered in my notes on a portable SSD that will not mount on a Mac. Both brands break; what differs is what happens to the warranty when they do.

What the byte clause is worth in numbers

A byte cap only matters if a real workload can reach it, so I worked out the crossover. Dividing a TBW budget by a warranty term gives the daily write rate at which the byte clause fires before the calendar one:

For scale, iostat -Id disk0 here shows 2,358,090.84 MB of cumulative transfers over 2.9767 days of uptime, averaging 792.2 GB/day, while a 60-second re-check gave 199.2 GB/day. Those differ by a factor of four, and both count reads together with writes on the internal disk rather than writes to an external target, so neither is a backup workload. They establish the order of magnitude only, which is the point: a machine that never sleeps lands in the same range as this table, and sizing that workload properly is what my post on how big a Time Machine drive needs to be works through.

For the Samsung there is no such table to build. The Portable SSD Full Warranty Statement runs 3 pages and 8,425 characters, and TBW, endurance, wear and bytes written appear zero times in it; the T9 datasheet is the same at 4 pages and 4,590 characters. Five years is five years.

One correction while I am here, because search summaries keep getting this wrong. Samsung's T9 datasheet does contain a "four (4) hours of operation per day" phrase, quoted around the web as though it capped the drive warranty for always-on use, but the subject of that sentence is narrower: "The LED component of the T9 is warranted for five (5) years of typical use, typical use for the purposes of this warranty defined as four (4) hours of operation per day at temperatures of 40℃ or below." It scopes the LED.

What I would buy

Prices are missing from this post on purpose: Amazon returned an identical 3,781-byte challenge page for five ASINs across two user agents this session, with zero matches for the productTitle and availability elements, so any figure I quoted would be invented rather than checked.

For a drive bolted to a machine that runs all day, the Samsung T9 2TB is what I would order, and the reason is the absence of a clause rather than anything printed on the box. Its five years cannot quietly become two. The Crucial X9 Pro 2TB is the better answer for a drive that lives in a bag: IP55, generally the cheaper of the two, and at an occasional-use duty cycle no plausible TBW figure is reachable inside five years. The rule I am taking away is smaller than a product verdict. A warranty term that depends on a meter is worth only as much as your ability to read that meter, and if the vendor's health tool does not run on your operating system, the term is one you cannot audit until the day you need it.
