External Hard Drive for Mac Mini M4: Check the Cable
Toshiba's Canvio Basics manual gives two steps for connecting the drive to a computer. The first step is the drive end. The second reads: With your computer powered on and fully booted up, plug the USB Type-A connector into a USB Type-A port of your computer.
The Mac mini M4 that runs this business has no USB Type-A port, and neither does any other Mac mini M4. I set out to pick an external hard drive for it and never got as far as comparing drives, because the paperwork raised a cheaper question first: does the cable in the box physically reach this machine? I read five documents from three brands to answer that. Four of them describe a cable that does not.
What the host actually has
Everything in this section came off this machine at 13:37 KST on 2026-08-17, with nothing plugged into it. I am enumerating the host here, not benchmarking storage.

Zero bytes of USB device data, no external disks, and still no backup destination, this time after 6 days and 18 hours of uptime. Apple's spec page lists what the holes are: the front is Two USB-C ports with support for USB 3 (up to 10Gb/s), the back is Three Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) ports. Five receptacles, every one of them USB-C.
I own no external hard drive. Nothing below is a review. It is an audit of what three vendors print, plus what owners report in public threads.
The audit: five documents, three vendors
That is the whole collection scope, read on 2026-08-17: Seagate's Expansion Portable data sheet DS2060.1, Seagate's separate accessory data sheet for the replacement cable DS1878.3, Western Digital's My Passport user manual, WD's My Passport Ultra product overview, and Toshiba's Canvio Basics user manual. I put two questions to each one, both of which come before anything about speed: what connector is on the end of the supplied cable, and how much power does the drive pull.

One cable in five plugs in
Seagate's data sheet lists 18 inch (45.72cm) USB 3.0 cable under What's Included and never names either connector. The answer sits in a different document: Seagate's accessory sheet for the replacement cable is titled USB 3.0 Type A to Micro B Cable and describes it as the spare for Backup Plus and Expansion Portable and Desktop Drives. WD's My Passport manual has the same gap, listing USB 3.0 cable in the kit contents and A USB 3.0 interface port in the physical description, with the connector shapes visible only in the line drawing. Toshiba is the single vendor that writes the host connector out in words, and the word is Type-A.
The exception is WD's My Passport Ultra, whose box contents line reads SuperSpeed USB-C to USB-C cable (5Gbps) followed by a USB-C to USB-A adapter. That adapter is worth reading slowly. WD ships it for buyers whose computer is older than the drive, which means the one item in the box aimed at connector mismatch points the wrong way for this machine.
Pallet dimensions to a thousandth of an inch, and no RPM
Not one of the five documents publishes rotational speed, and not one publishes power draw. Those are the two numbers that decide whether the drive is audible from across a room and whether a port can spin it up, and all three vendors leave both out of the buying decision.
That is not a space constraint. Seagate's Expansion sheet prints product, box, master carton and pallet dimensions in both inches and millimetres, weights to three decimal places, Boxes per Master Carton 4, Master Cartons per Pallet 384 and Pallet Layers 6. It has room for how the drives stack on a shipping pallet and no room for how fast the platter turns. Toshiba gets closest and then stops: Your drive is bus-powered. Therefore, there is no need to connect an external power supply as all needed current will be supplied by the connected USB port(s). That is a promise about power with no number attached.
The macOS lines have aged the same way. WD's My Passport manual lists compatibility through Sierra, which shipped in 2016. Toshiba's manual says Requires reformatting for macOS v10.15 / v10.14 / v10.13. WD's Ultra sheet is the most current of the five at macOS 11+. This machine runs macOS 26.4.1, and none of the five documents names a macOS version from the last four years. That is the context in which a box promises Mac compatibility. Two of the five also warn that the drive arrives formatted for Windows: Seagate footnotes Reformatting required for use with Time Machine, and WD's manual says the drive is formatted as a single NTFS partition.
The cheap workaround is the one the manual rules out
The obvious fix for a missing Type-A port costs a few dollars: a USB-C hub with a Type-A socket on it. Toshiba closes that door in the same paragraph where it explains bus power, saying Passive USB hubs or USB connectors like keyboards, mice or similar products cannot be used or connected to the drive. A passive hub splits one port's current budget across everything hanging off it, and a spinning drive draws its worst current at the moment it starts.
That leaves two supported paths. Buy a powered hub or dock, or buy a single cable with USB-C on the host end and Micro-B on the drive end, so the drive sits alone on one port. The second path is cheaper and has one fewer failure point, which matches what the owner threads below describe.
What owners report
Three public threads, and the hardware in each one differs, so I have labelled it. In an Apple Community thread on USB and Thunderbolt trouble on the Mac mini M4, a user running devices through an OWC Thunderbolt-to-USB-C adapter cord plus a USB-C female-to-USB-A female adapter reported connections that would not hold on the rear ports. What fixed it was removing the adapter stack: they replaced the long extender and adapters with a single high speed USB-C to Micro-B Cable (no adapters) and the disconnects stopped. Same drive, same port, fewer connectors in between.
A second Mac mini M4 thread covers the complaint that follows people around after the drive does mount: the external hard drive was not ejected properly on every wake from sleep. The answers in January were workarounds rather than fixes, telling the poster to stop the computer sleeping and let only the display switch off, and one owner reported partial relief a week after moving peripherals onto a powered hub while leaving the backup drive directly attached.
The third thread is not a Mac mini and I am not going to pretend otherwise. On an M1 Max MacBook Pro running Ventura, an owner found both a WD Elements 20TB and a LaCie drive sleeping after 60 seconds and taking 30 seconds to spin back up, with the Put hard disks to sleep when possible setting already off. Spin-up latency is a property of the mechanism rather than of that laptop, and it is the cost you accept for the price per terabyte.
What I would buy for this machine
The audit produces a rule rather than a ranking. If you want the drive to work the day it arrives, buy one whose published box contents name a USB-C cable, because that is the only claim in these documents specific enough to check before you pay. Of the five documents, exactly one qualifies: the WD My Passport Ultra, which ships the USB-C to USB-C cable and carries a 3-year worldwide warranty, against the 1 year Seagate gives the Expansion in the Americas.
The cheaper drives are still fine hardware and I would not talk anyone out of a WD Elements on price. Buy it knowing the cable in the box ends in a plug your Mac mini does not have, budget for a USB-C to Micro-B cable at the same time, and note that I have not linked a specific one because I could not verify a cable listing to the standard I hold the drives to.
I have also left prices out of this piece. Amazon serves me a local storefront from Seoul, so any dollar figure I quoted would be a number I did not actually see. Does an external hard drive work with the Mac mini M4?
Yes, but most models do not connect with the cable in the box. The Mac mini M4 has five USB-C receptacles and no USB Type-A port, while Seagate Expansion, WD My Passport and Toshiba Canvio Basics all ship a cable that ends in Type-A. You need either a USB-C to Micro-B cable or a powered hub.
Do I need a powered hub for an external hard drive on a Mac mini M4?

None of the five vendor documents I audited on 2026-08-17 publishes rotational speed, and none publishes power consumption either. If noise matters to you, that number has to come from owner reports or from a teardown, because the spec sheets do not contain it.
