WD Elements vs My Passport: What WD's Warranty Table Says
At 13:39 today tmutil destinationinfo printed the same line it has printed since July 30: No destinations configured. system_profiler SPUSBDataType returned 0 bytes—all five ports on this Mac mini are still empty. The purchase is still open, and the two candidates that keep landing in the same price band are WD’s own siblings: Elements Portable and My Passport.
Every comparison page I could find settles this in one line: Elements gets two years, My Passport gets three, and My Passport adds 256-bit AES hardware encryption. I went to WD’s warranty table instead of taking that on faith. It does not key the warranty to the product line at all.
What I read, and how much of it
This is a documents pass, not a hands-on review. I own neither drive. On 2026-08-11 I read: WD’s Product Warranty Periods table in full—six regional blocks, 34 rows naming Elements, My Passport or My Book; the My Passport user manual (899KB PDF, 98,695 characters extracted with pdftotext -layout); WD’s WD Security article (updated 2026-04-20); three owner threads; and two retail listings. It is the fourth pass of this kind—the SSD warranty fine print post read eight vendor documents the same way on August 5.
The warranty is printed on the suffix, not the line
Here are three rows from the Americas block of WD’s table. The product name in all three is the same string—WD Elements Portable:

EMEA repeats the same three tiers. APAC has no 3-year row for those suffixes at all—except in a separate “APAC - India Only” block, where WDBUZG and WDBU6Y get three years regardless of suffix. One product line, a 1–3 year spread, decided by two characters and a shipping region.
This lands directly on a link I already publish. The Elements Portable ASIN I have been pointing at since the HDD-versus-SSD post carries the model number WDBU6Y0020BBK-WESN right in its Amazon title—the middle row. Two years, not the three that the comparison articles promise, and not the three that the identical -SESN unit would get.
My Passport’s three years is also a suffix, and one model contradicts its own listing
The My Passport rows split the same way. In the Americas block, WDBWML, WDBY3J, WDBPKJ, WDBS4B and WDBBEX sit in a 3-year row. But WDBYVG—the plain 2TB My Passport that has been the volume seller for years—appears in the 2-year row, twice.
Its retail copy says otherwise. Newegg’s listing for WDBYVG0020BBK-WESN ($169.99 direct, checked 2026-08-11) writes “Coupled with a 3-year limited warranty” in the description—while the spec table on the same page declines to state one: “Please contact the Seller directly for warranty information.”
I am not adjudicating that one. A model prefix is not a serial number, and WD runs a serial-number warranty checker precisely because the answer is per-unit. The usable rule is the smaller one: the warranty you get is a property of the box in front of you, not of the product line in the headline. Read the suffix, then check the serial.
What the premium actually buys
Strip the warranty question out and the remaining difference is software. WD Security’s support article names all thirteen drives it works with—“My Book, My Book for Mac, My Book Duo, WD Drive Plus, My Passport works with USB-C, My Passport, My Passport for Mac,” the four My Passport Ultra variants, My Passport Ultra Metal, and WD Backup Drive Desktop. WD Elements is not on that list, in any form. That is the real product boundary: Elements is the same class of drive with the security stack withheld.
The manual is more careful about that stack than the box is. The marketing page promises “256-bit hardware data encryption capabilities.” Page 18, where you actually set a password, says: “Depending on your location¹, using a password may encrypt your data.” Footnote 1 explains: “Not all of Western Digital’s products contain active data encryption. For some markets, like Russia, the encryption is disabled and cannot be enabled by the end user.” So the headline feature carries a jurisdiction asterisk that no comparison page I read mentioned.
For a backup target, the feature is a liability
My use case is narrow: a Time Machine destination for a headless Mac mini that nobody sits at. In that role, encryption tied to a specific enclosure is a failure mode, not a feature. WD’s own article says so in capitals: “All of the data will be lost if the password is forgotten. Tech Support cannot recover a lost or forgotten password. THE DRIVE WILL NEED TO BE ERASED BEFORE IT CAN BE USED AGAIN.” The manual adds the mechanism—five wrong attempts on the unlock dialog offer you an erase, which is the only exit.
Owners describe the hardware side of the same trap. In a 2014 AnandTech thread titled “Don’t buy the WD My Passport USB drive”, fuzzybabybunny reported a 2TB unit dying after a day and then found there was no way around the enclosure: “Completely proprietary… The SATA connectors don’t even exist on the drive. They’re simply not there. So basically my data is completely hosed.” Zxian’s reply cuts both ways: “External drives should never be the primary storage solution for any data worth saving.” It is also the argument for spending the difference on history depth rather than on a lock.
Two Mac footnotes that decided it
First, the manual is stale where Macs are concerned. It still instructs: “To use the drive on Mac OS X operating systems, and to use Time Machine, if you want, you must reformat the drive to a single HFS+J partition.” Modern macOS does not offer that choice—it forced APFS on the destination when I worked through Time Machine’s filesystem behaviour on August 7.
Second, the bundled software has a rough history on Apple silicon. On 2020-11-19 a WD staff account answered an M1 owner with one sentence: “WD Discovery does not support computer systems running ARM based processors.” ARM builds arrived later, but two years on a Ventura thread opened with JohnB4: “Since upgrading to Ventura, WD Discovery no longer functions. I can’t log in.” The fix users converged on (inadal, 2022-11-24) was to allow system extensions and set the machine’s Security Policy to Reduced Security from Recovery mode. Both threads are filed under My Cloud Home and concern WD Discovery rather than WD Security itself—but Discovery is the launcher those apps ship inside, and “boot to Recovery and lower the security policy” is an expensive prerequisite for a backup disk on a FileVault-locked machine that already needs a human at every reboot.
What I would buy for this rig
For a Time Machine target on an unattended Mac the software is an anti-feature, so the premium is not worth paying for that reason. Buy on suffix and capacity instead. If the two land within about $20 of each other in whatever week you look—and they often do—take the one whose suffix buys the longer warranty. That is the only difference here that survives contact with a headless machine, and it is the same conclusion the rest of this drive-shopping series keeps reaching: the cheaper option wins on the criteria that actually apply.

Is WD Elements really only 2 years and My Passport 3?
Not as a rule. WD’s warranty table keys the period to the model-number suffix and the region, and lists “WD Elements Portable” at 3, 2 and 1 years in the Americas block alone. Some My Passport models are listed at 2 years. Check the suffix on the box, then the serial in WD’s checker.
Does WD Elements support WD Security password protection?
No. WD Elements does not appear anywhere on the compatible-drive list in WD’s own WD Security article. If you want a password on an Elements drive, you use the operating system’s encryption instead.
Which is better for Time Machine on a Mac?
Neither has a Time Machine advantage once you reformat, which macOS makes you do. The difference that matters is the encryption: if a My Passport’s password is lost, WD states the data cannot be recovered and the drive must be erased—a worse property in a backup target than in a travel disk.
