Vinyl Cutter for Mac: 4 Apps Native, 2 Bundles Windows-Only
A vinyl cutter for a Mac is mostly a software question, and the box is the least reliable place to answer it. VEVOR's 28-inch plotter is a good example. Its product page says the machine "supports Windows 7–11 and macOS" and ships with "a licensed SignMaster activation code." VEVOR's own guide to the same cutter says "The Signmaster software is currently designed for Windows operating systems only." Both statements are true. The cutter takes commands from a Mac, and the software in the box doesn't run on one.
I don't own a cutter. On 2026-10-16 I downloaded the Mac installers for four cutting apps, opened them without installing anything, and checked what each one is built for, who signed it, and what macOS version it asks for. That census is mine. What the machines do in use comes from maker pages and owner threads, and I label it that way.
The four Mac installers, opened
All four packages passed spctl as "Notarized Developer ID", so Gatekeeper will open them. I ran lipo -archs on every Mach-O file inside each app. The minimum-macOS column shows two numbers on purpose: the one the maker publishes and the one the app itself declares in LSMinimumSystemVersion. They never agree.
| App (version) | Signed by | Apple silicon | macOS, published | macOS, in the app | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Silhouette Studio 5.0.539.001 | Silhouette Research & Technology | Universal, 164 of 164 binaries | 12+ (Homebrew cask) | 10.10 | Comes with the machine |
| Brother CanvasWorkspace 2.7.1 | Brother Industries | Two separate packages: arm64-only or x86_64-only | 15, 26 | 12.0 | Free |
| Sure Cuts A Lot 6.085 | Craft Edge | Universal, 8 of 8 | 10.13 to 27.x | 10.11 | $59.99 sale ($80 list) |
| Easy Cut Studio 6.026 | Craft Edge | Universal, 7 of 7 | 10.13+ on one page, "10.8 to 26.7" on another | 10.11 | $59.95 sale ($99.95 list) |
Two programs that don't appear in the table matter just as much. SignMaster, bundled with VEVOR's plotters, is Windows-only by VEVOR's own account. Roland's CutStudio, bundled with the GS2-24, is the same: Roland's install article says it "Cannot be installed on Mac OS. Please install the plug-in," meaning the Illustrator plug-in. I couldn't measure Cricut Design Space. Its download link is produced at runtime by design.cricut.com and I didn't get a file. Cricut's system requirements list macOS 12 or later and an internet connection to download and sign in.
The two Mac options for budget plotters are one program
If your cutter came with SignMaster or CutStudio, the usual advice is to buy Sure Cuts A Lot or Easy Cut Studio for the Mac side. They look like rival products with different websites. Inside the packages, they are the same code:
$ codesign -dv "Easy Cut Studio 6.app" 2>&1 | grep -E 'Identifier=|TeamIdentifier'
Identifier=com.craftedge.easycutstudio3
TeamIdentifier=GPCGDW5XMM
$ codesign -dv "Sure Cuts A Lot 6.app" 2>&1 | grep -E 'Identifier=|TeamIdentifier'
Identifier=com.craftedge.surecutsalot6
TeamIdentifier=GPCGDW5XMM
Both installers are signed "Developer ID Installer: CRAFT EDGE INC." The main binaries contain 337 and 330 distinct class names starting with CBKNS_Scal, and 327 of them are the same. They also share the VEVOR device classes (CBK_ScalDeviceVevor, CBK_ScalUsb_VevorSmart and so on) and the driver-check code. Buying both buys the same cutter support twice. Pick whichever interface you prefer during the 15-day trial. Both trials cut a horizontal line through the design until you activate.
VEVOR support is recent and still moving. Craft Edge's Mac version history lists "Fixed a problem cutting with Vevor SMART" in 6.077 and, in 6.084, fixes for the VEVOR SK dual tool and for VEVOR SMART cuts longer than 12 inches. The download I got was already 6.085, one build past the history page. Owners report both routes in a June 2024 review of a 53-inch VEVOR on the V1 Engineering forum. The reviewer wrote "NOTE: the software is Windows only. I am using Mac," and ran SignMaster in Parallels Desktop. A later reply in the same thread is from someone who has run a VEVOR 720 with Easy Cut Studio 6.006 "for the past 5 years."
Brother ships two Mac apps, and one of them needs Rosetta
Brother's CanvasWorkspace download page offers BrotherCanvasWorkspace_applesilicon.pkg and BrotherCanvasWorkspace_intel.pkg instead of one universal app. In the Apple silicon package, 17 binaries are arm64-only. In the Intel package, 17 are x86_64-only. Only 4 helper binaries are universal in either one. Pick the wrong one on an M-series Mac and it runs under Rosetta, which Apple says ends after macOS 27 for most apps. The version numbers also disagree. The page lists macOS 15 and 26, the app declares 12.0, and the installer's own check accepts 10.12. On macOS 14 the app will probably install, but you'd be outside what Brother says it supports.
The USB driver prompt is older than your Mac
Most budget plotters talk over a USB serial chip. The Sure Cuts A Lot binary still names three driver installers (InstallFtdiDriver.app, InstallCH341Driver.app, InstallUARTBridgeDriver.app). It checks for drivers by asking /usr/sbin/kextstat about four kernel-extension IDs, including com.apple.driver.AppleUSBFTDI. On macOS 26, kextstat only forwards to kmutil, and Apple's own FTDI and CH340 drivers ship as DriverKit extensions named com.apple.DriverKit-AppleUSBFTDI and com.apple.DriverKit-AppleUSBCHCOM. As I covered in USB to serial adapter for Mac, those match the common FTDI and CH340 chips without an install. I had no cutter attached, so I can't say whether this mismatch makes the app offer a driver you don't need. If it does, plug the cutter in and run ls /dev/cu.* before installing anything. A new cu.usbserial-* or cu.wchusbserial* entry means macOS already has it.
That advice comes from older threads. In a 2012 Sure Cuts A Lot forum thread, a USCutter MH owner on Mac OS X 10.7.5 got "US Cutter machine could not be found" and fixed it with FTDI's driver 2.2.18 and a baud rate of 9600. That was before macOS had its own driver. A 2021 thread about a CAMEO 4 on macOS 10.15 shows the other common failure: Silhouette Studio could see the cutter but SCAL5 couldn't, and "Test Connection" crashed it. The moderator's first suggestion was to quit Silhouette Studio before using SCAL. No fix was posted.
What I'd buy for a Mac
If you don't want a second program, buy a machine whose own software is native. Going by the census, Silhouette is the cleanest: one universal app, every binary dual-architecture. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. The Silhouette Cameo 5 Alpha was $299.99 on Amazon US on 2026-10-16, with "Only 1 left in stock" and 590 ratings. One drawback is in the table above. Third-party support lags, and Sure Cuts A Lot only added the CAMEO 5 Alpha in 6.084. Brother's ScanNCut SDX125 ($449.99, "Only 3 left in stock", 561 ratings, same day) also works if you download the Apple silicon package.
For a 24-inch-plus sign plotter, budget about $60 more for Sure Cuts A Lot or Easy Cut Studio. Before you order, check that your exact model appears in its cutter list during the trial. The same "check the bundled software, not the machine" pattern shows up for laser engraver software on a Mac and for 3D printer slicers, where the hardware is rarely the blocker.
The prices and stock above were read from the Amazon US product pages on 2026-10-16 with a New York delivery address.
FAQ
Do VEVOR vinyl cutters work with a Mac?
The cutter can, but the SignMaster software VEVOR bundles is Windows-only by VEVOR's own statement. On a Mac you either run SignMaster in a Windows virtual machine or use Sure Cuts A Lot 6 or Easy Cut Studio 6. Both are universal Mac apps from the same developer, Craft Edge, and both list VEVOR support.
Is Silhouette Studio native on Apple silicon?
Yes. Version 5.0.539.001, the current Homebrew cask version as of 2026-10-16, is a universal app. All 164 Mach-O binaries inside it contain both x86_64 and arm64 code, so it does not need Rosetta on an M-series Mac.
What's the difference between Sure Cuts A Lot and Easy Cut Studio?
Very little under the hood. Both Mac apps are signed by Craft Edge with the same Apple team ID, share 327 of roughly 330 internal app class names and the same cutter drivers, and both offer a 15-day watermarked trial. They differ in interface, price and branding, so try both and buy one.

How this was checked: on 2026-10-16, on a Mac mini (Mac16,10, macOS 26.4.1, Rosetta not installed), I downloaded Silhouette Studio 5.0.539.001 (the Homebrew cask URL), Brother CanvasWorkspace 2.7.1 (both packages from Brother's support site), Sure Cuts A Lot 6.085 and Easy Cut Studio 6.026 (from the makers' download pages). I mounted or expanded them without installing. I ran spctl -a, pkgutil --check-signature and codesign -dv on each, lipo -archs on every Mach-O file, read LSMinimumSystemVersion and each installer's Distribution file, and ran strings on the two Craft Edge binaries. Published requirements and prices come from each maker's pages the same day. Cricut Design Space was not downloaded. No cutter was connected, so nothing here was tested with hardware. Owner reports come from the V1 Engineering and Sure Cuts A Lot forum threads linked above, and Amazon prices were read from the product pages the same day.
