The big consumer 3D scanner brands all list a Mac download now, so "does it work on a Mac" has stopped being a useful question. The useful one is which Mac app your scanner gets, and what that installer puts on the machine. On 2026-10-15 I downloaded the current Mac installers from Revopoint and Shining 3D (Einstar) and took them apart without installing them. Revopoint's older app, still the only Mac option for four of its scanners, is Intel-only in 198 of its 201 binaries and fails Gatekeeper's signature check as shipped. Its newer app is fully native but installs a root daemon that stays running. Einstar's Hub app has no daemon, but its install script makes the app's own executable folder writable by every standard user on the Mac.

$ lipo -archs RevoScan5.app/Contents/MacOS/RevoScan5     # Revo Scan 5.5.5.5
x86_64
$ lipo -archs RevoScan6.app/Contents/MacOS/RevoScan6     # Revo Scan 6.4.1.404
arm64

The Intel part matters on a deadline. Apple's developer news post of 2026-09-01 calls macOS 27 the final release to support Rosetta for apps, and its Rosetta support page says that from macOS 28 it remains only for certain older games.

I don't own a 3D scanner. The package checks below are mine, run on a Mac mini that has never had Rosetta installed. What the scanners do in use comes from maker documentation and owner threads on the Revopoint and Creality forums, and I say which is which.

Four 3D scanner installers, expanded without installing

For each package I ran pkgutil --check-signature, expanded it with pkgutil --expand-full, read the pre- and post-install scripts, and ran lipo -archs on every Mach-O file inside: apps, libraries, plugins and helpers. The machine is a Mac mini M4 (Mac16,10, 16 GB) on macOS 26.4.1. Across the three packages I could download in full, that came to 1,082 Mach-O files.

CrealityScan and EXStar 1.2.2.0 were not counted (see below).
Revopoint ships two Mac apps a generation apart. Which one you get depends on the scanner model, not the Mac.

Two gaps. I could not get CrealityScan's Mac installer: Creality's download page builds its links in the browser, and every request I made to the API behind it came back "Invalid Parameter". The original Einstar's EXStar 1.2.2.0 package downloaded at about 50 KB/s from Shining 3D's CDN, so I read its table of contents and scripts with HTTP range requests instead of counting its 2,763 files.

Which scanners are stuck on the Intel app

Revopoint's download page lists different scanners for each Mac app. Revo Scan 6 for Mac (V6.4.1, updated 2026-10-14) supports the POP 4, INSPIRE 2, INSPIRE, MINI 2, RANGE 2, POP 3, POP 3 Plus and the MIRACO line. Revo Scan 5 for Mac covers most of the older models, including the original POP, POP 2, MINI and RANGE, and for those four it's the only Mac app. That build is Intel at the core, from the main executable to the root helper and libusb. Its build metadata says it was compiled against the macOS 26.1 SDK, so this isn't abandoned code; it's a current Intel build.

It also doesn't open cleanly. pkgutil reports the package as having "no signature," and codesign --verify --deep --strict on the app stops at Contents/MacOS/res/pic/img_color_normal.png: "code object is not signed at all." Revopoint keeps images and config folders in the directory where macOS expects only signed code. Owners have hit this as Gatekeeper refusals; a forum workaround post walks through stripping the quarantine flag with xattr.

The longest Mac thread on Revopoint's forum, "Why such poor Mac support in 2025?" (47 posts, 1,583 views), opens with the missing Apple silicon build. Replying for Revopoint, the forum moderator put the customer split at "8 use Win and maybe 1 or 2 Mac", and said Mac GPU acceleration was missing because it depended on CUDA. Revo Scan 6 is the answer to that thread for newer models. It launched without 3D Gaussian splatting on Mac, which arrived a few days after an owner complained.

What the installers run as root

Both Revopoint packages install a LaunchDaemon with no UserName key, which means it runs as root, and with KeepAlive set, which means launchd restarts it whenever it exits. Revo Scan 6's version:

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.revopoint3d.RevoScan6_CameraHelper.plist
  KeepAlive        = true
  RunAtLoad        = true
  ProgramArguments = /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/RevoScan6/rpcServiceRS6

Strings in its camera library point to the job: source paths like 3DCameraSDK-macOS/src/rpc/rpcServer/rpcServerCamera.cpp, the address 127.0.0.1, and libusb calls. The scanner is a USB device, and this helper brokers it to the app over a local connection. The difference between a LaunchDaemon and a LaunchAgent is who the job runs as and when it starts, and this one starts at boot whether a scanner is plugged in or not. Revo Scan 5's helper is the same design, but its binary is x86_64-only. On a Mac without Rosetta, that's a KeepAlive job pointing at a file the kernel refuses to run. I didn't install it to watch launchd retry.

The helper is also where owners get stuck. Revopoint's own fix for "No scanner detected" with a POP 4 is to allow the driver in Login Items & Extensions. One owner with an M-series Mac mini and MacBook Pro replied that it didn't help, and that what worked was sudo killall -9 rpcServiceRS6 while the app was running. Creality uses a similar process. Its wiki's fix for Macs that don't see the scanner is to force-quit "RPC Server" in Activity Monitor and check a "sudo" item in Login Items. Two Creality threads, one and another (644 and 638 views), have Raptor owners asked for an admin password to reach the camera, one of them at every launch.

Einstar's Hub takes the other route: no helper at all. Its postinstall script handles the app writing into its own bundle, and the comment says so: "The current application writes runtime state inside the app bundle." For four folders, including Contents/MacOS, it runs:

/usr/sbin/chown -R root:staff "$dir"
/bin/chmod -R g+rwX,o-w "$dir"
/bin/chmod +a "group:staff allow list,search,add_file,add_subdirectory,delete_child,..." "$dir"

Every standard account on a Mac is in staff, so after install any local user can add or replace files in the folder that holds the app's executables. On a single-user Mac that changes little. On a shared one it's worth knowing. The preinstall script, run on upgrades, picks the user whose config it deletes by reading last -1, the most recent login, rather than asking the installer.

The Mac hardware floor, on paper and in owner reports

Scanner (Mac app)Minimum Mac, per the makerRecommended
Revopoint POP 4 (Revo Scan 6)M1 Pro/Max/Ultra, 16 GBM3 Pro or better, 24 GB
Revopoint INSPIRE 2 (Revo Scan 6)"M1 /M2 Pro/Max/Ultra, M3 Pro/Max/Ultra", 16 GB24 GB
Einstar 2 / Rockit (EXStar Hub)M1 Pro, M2 Pro, M3, M4 or M5, 16 GB, macOS 26.2Pro/Max chips, 24 GB; "MacBook Air is not among the recommended models"
Einstar (EXStar)M1 Pro, 8-core GPU, 32 GB, macOS 13n/a
Creality Raptor (CrealityScan)Intel i5 8th gen, 8 GBM1 to M4, 16 GB

Sources: the POP 4 figures are Revopoint's spec as republished on 3DJake's product page; INSPIRE 2 is the Revopoint moderator's post in the thread above; Einstar 2 is Shining 3D's EXStar Hub download article; original Einstar is the Einstar FAQ; Raptor is Creality's software manual. On paper, a base M4 Mac mini with 16 GB like mine falls below the POP 4 and original Einstar minimums. It meets Hub's minimum, and it's Creality's recommended tier.

Owners report the paper floor is conservative for the POP 4. In a thread asking who runs one on a Mac, one owner got 50 to 60 fps over Wi-Fi on an M4 Mac mini, another had no trouble over USB-C on a MacBook Air M4, and a third used an M4 Max. A fourth saw 20 to 30 fps on an M5 MacBook Pro against about 50 on an M4 mini, and said Revopoint support traced it to the scanner firmware. RAM matters more than the chip once you process large scans. I covered how 16 GB holds up on a Mac mini that never sleeps in 16GB vs 24GB on a Mac mini.

Which 3D scanner to buy for a Mac

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Prices are Amazon US as of 2026-10-15, read with a New York delivery address; both listings showed in stock with an add-to-cart button.

Avoid buying a used POP, POP 2, original MINI or original RANGE for a Mac. Their only Mac app is the Intel build, which needs Rosetta through macOS 27 and has no announced replacement. If you lean toward Einstar 2, check your macOS version first. Hub requires macOS 26.2 even though the binary declares 14.0. This is the same split I found for laser engraver software on a Mac and USB microscope apps, and the opposite of 3D printer slicers, where all eight ran natively.

Check a scanner installer before you run it

# Signature and notarization of the package itself
pkgutil --check-signature RevoScan6-6.4.1.404-mac-arm64.pkg

# Unpack without installing, then read what runs as root
pkgutil --expand-full RevoScan6-6.4.1.404-mac-arm64.pkg /tmp/rs6
cat /tmp/rs6/*/Scripts/postinstall
find /tmp/rs6 -path '*LaunchDaemons*'

# After install: is the helper loaded?
sudo launchctl print system/com.revopoint3d.RevoScan6_CameraHelper | head

FAQ

Does Revopoint Revo Scan work on Apple silicon Macs?

Revo Scan 6 does: the 6.4.1.404 Mac package has no Intel-only code and is notarized. It supports the POP 4, INSPIRE 2, INSPIRE, MINI 2, RANGE 2, POP 3, POP 3 Plus and MIRACO models. The original POP, POP 2, MINI and RANGE only have Revo Scan 5 on Mac, which is an Intel build that needs Rosetta, and Apple supports Rosetta for apps only through macOS 27.

Which 3D scanners work with a Mac?

As of 2026-10-15, Revopoint (Revo Scan 6), Shining 3D's Einstar 2 and Rockit (EXStar Hub, macOS 26.2 or later), the original Einstar (EXStar 1.2.2, Apple silicon with 32 GB) and Creality's Ferret, Otter and Raptor lines (CrealityScan 4) all have Mac apps. Most makers list an M1 Pro or better with 16 GB as the minimum, though owners report the POP 4 running on base M4 Macs.

Why does my Mac not detect my 3D scanner?

Revopoint and Creality both route the scanner through a background helper process, and that helper is the usual failure point. Revopoint's fix is to allow its driver under System Settings, General, Login Items & Extensions; some owners instead restart the rpcServiceRS6 process. Creality's fix is to force-quit "RPC Server" in Activity Monitor and enable its item in Login Items.

Related: the same Intel-only problem shows up in film scanning. VueScan 9.8.59 ships an x86_64-only library for the original Plustek OpticFilm 135, and a native arm64 process refuses to load it. The full census is in film scanner for Mac.

How this was checked: on 2026-10-15, on a Mac mini (Mac16,10, 16 GB, macOS 26.4.1, no Rosetta installed), I downloaded Revo Scan 5.5.5.5 and 6.4.1.404 from Revopoint's download server and EXStar Hub 1.1.3-10 from the Shining 3D link on its support page, then ran pkgutil --check-signature and pkgutil --expand-full, read every install script and LaunchDaemon plist, and ran lipo -archs on all 1,082 Mach-O files inside, plus otool -l, codesign and spctl on the apps. Nothing was installed or launched; I only ran the Revo Scan 5 executable directly to confirm "bad CPU type in executable." EXStar 1.2.2.0 was read through range requests (table of contents, Distribution and scripts only). CrealityScan's Mac installer and 3DMakerpro's JMStudio were not obtained. No scanner was connected, so nothing here was tested with hardware. Owner reports come from Revopoint and Creality forum threads read through their JSON API. Prices and stock come from Amazon US product pages read the same day.
