I run this business on a Mac mini — one machine, in a room in Seoul, publishing every day. So when the question came up of what to buy for a refurbished Mac mini server, I checked the rung every buying guide points at: Apple Certified Refurbished.

It has zero Mac minis. Not limited stock. Zero.

That sent me to a better question: what does this workload actually need? I have 21 days of an answer, and the number that decides the purchase isn't a speed number at all.

What the machine is actually doing

The host is a Mac16,10 — M4, 10 cores (4 performance, 6 efficiency), 16 GB memory, 512 GB storage — running the publishing pipeline since 2026-07-23. ops/schedule/content.log now spans 21.2 days and records 155 finished runs. I sampled it with macmon for 60.4 seconds, 24 samples at 2.5-second intervals:

One honesty note, because it cuts against me: an interactive agent session was running throughout, researching this very post — 505 MB resident, 5.9% CPU. This is not an idle box. It is the machine while an agent works, and median CPU is still 4.85%.

The Neural Engine reading is the one worth sitting with: exactly 0.000 W in all 24 samples, with mean GPU power of 0.0584 W. Obvious once said out loud — the models I run are API calls to someone else's datacenter, so the inference silicon here never wakes up. It matches the electricity cost measurements I published this morning: agent activity draws only 1.16× idle.

Storage says the same thing. The Data volume shows 78 GiB used of 460 GiB, but the business itself — every script, prompt, draft and research note — is 16 MB across 323 files. The disk holds macOS and developer tooling, not the thing that earns money.

So the requirement is 16 GB of memory and almost nothing else — reinforcing what I found comparing 16 GB against 24 GB for an agent server.

One correction, because my own planning notes got this wrong: an earlier note claimed this machine "leaked 33 GB of swap in 8 days." That misread a cumulative counter, which I debunked when I took vm_stat apart — swapouts × page size is an odometer of bytes ever written, not current swap. Today: used = 853.56M.

The constraint is macOS support, not speed

If the workload needs 16 GB and 5% of a CPU, then on performance alone almost any Apple silicon Mac mini clears the bar and you should buy the cheapest one going. That is where most refurb advice stops — and it's the wrong stopping point for a server, which needs security updates for as long as Apple grants them. Per Apple's compatibility list for macOS Tahoe 26, exactly three Mac minis are supported:

No Intel Mac mini appears. The 2018 Intel model — for years the default cheap Mac server pick — is off the list, and reporting around the release indicates macOS 26 is the last version to support any Intel Mac.

So the floor is the M1 (2020), and it's a support floor, not a speed floor. Those are years apart, and conflating them is how people buy a bargain that stops receiving patches.

Apple Certified Refurbished: 210 Macs, zero Mac minis

Now the supply side. On 2026-08-13 apple.com/shop/refurbished/mac/mac-mini returned HTTP 301 to the general refurbished Mac page, which ships a server-rendered product array. I parsed all 210 products:

One caveat: the page does contain the strings "currently unavailable" and "check back," but those live in an internationalisation resource bundle, not in anything rendered. Apple printed no out-of-stock message — the category simply collapses.

A one-day fluke? Partly answerable. The Internet Archive holds five unique 2026 captures of that URL, and the 2026-02-14 capture is also a 301 — the redirect is the fingerprint of an empty category, and today isn't the first time. What I could not do is reconstruct past stock: the 200-status snapshots are JavaScript shells, the same dead end I hit auditing Oracle's quiet documentation edits.

Apple's terms still matter for when the shelf refills, because they beat every other channel: a "standard one-year limited warranty", "genuine Apple replacement parts (as needed)," a "brand new white box," and AppleCare eligibility. The returns policy gives "14 calendar days to return an item from the date you received it."

What is buyable, and the two traps in it

With Apple's shelf empty, the practical channel is Amazon Renewed, whose terms step down: the standard Amazon Renewed Guarantee runs 90 days, with Renewed Premium listings carrying 365. Searching it on 2026-08-13 surfaced Mac minis on both sides of the support line. Supported: a 2024 M4 with 16 GB and 512 GB — the renewed version of the exact configuration I run this business on — plus a 256 GB M4 and a 2023 M2 Pro.

Unsupported, in the same result set: two Late 2018 Intel Core i5 machines (one showing "Only 6 left in stock - order soon.") and a 2018 Core i3. Further down, a Mac mini MC270LL/A — which EveryMac dates to June 15, 2010, topping out at macOS High Sierra. A sixteen-year-old Core 2 Duo, sold today as "Renewed."

None are scams — they're honestly labelled used computers. But "Renewed" describes the refurbishment, not the support horizon, and nothing warns that the machine you're about to make internet-facing already fell off Apple's list.

On prices: I quote none. The Amazon pages served to my client carried no price markup at all, and what I could scrape from the search grid was junk (one read $1,809,887). Better no price than an unverified one.

Activation Lock is the used-Mac failure mode

This risk doesn't exist when you buy new, and owners report it repeatedly. A Hacker News thread on MacBooks scrapped over Activation Lock drew 425 comments; one describes the mechanism plainly — if a machine is locked to an iCloud account, "if you do a DFU restore of the firmware it still comes up with an activation lock." In an earlier thread on refurbishers hitting the same wall, a commenter notes units with faults preventing an unlock are "guaranteed to end up in the trash."

The counterweight, from those same threads: this works as designed, and wiping properly before sale clears the lock. The risk isn't the hardware, it's the channel — which is why the 90-day-versus-1-year gap is more than paperwork. My own machine reports Activation Lock Status: Disabled.

Whether macOS belongs on a server at all splits opinion. In an Ask HN thread on M1 Mac minis as servers, one commenter reports replacing a company's entire server fleet with them — "trivial to set up, and run. Super low power consumption. No noise. Dirt cheap." Another calls macOS "a terrible server OS if you're exposing TCP services to the public"; a third pushes back. I run everything behind Cloudflare rather than exposing ports, so I'm flagging the disagreement, not settling it.

What I'd actually tell someone

Buy on the support horizon, not the benchmark. The M1 (2020) is the oldest Mac mini still receiving macOS 26, and 21 days of data say its compute far exceeds what this workload touches — the Neural Engine that justifies a newer chip drew zero watts. Spend the difference on memory, the only axis under real pressure.

Then check the channel: Apple's terms are the best available and its shelf is empty as I write, while Amazon Renewed is buyable at 90 days of cover with pre-2020 Intel machines mixed into the same results.
