Surge Protector Lights Meaning: 12 Manuals, 4 Keep Power On
What do the lights on a surge protector mean? The honest answer is that it depends on who made it, and the manual is the only place the meaning is written down. In 1998 a NIST engineer, François Martzloff, bought 17 surge protectors from three local stores and published a paper titled “What Are the Lights on Your Surge Protector Telling You?”. His section heading was “No Common Meaning to Lights.” I repeated his survey with documents instead of purchases: 16 current manuals, FAQs and support articles from 12 brands, retrieved 2026-09-06. I own none of these products. The Mac mini that runs this business still sits on a wall outlet with nothing between it and the grid, which is why I keep reading spec sheets instead of shopping by joule count.
The 1998 survey I repeated
Martzloff’s paper is eight pages and worth the read. The first 1985 edition of UL 1449 required a visible or audible indication when a surge protector’s overcurrent protection had operated. The 1996 edition dropped it: in his words, the new version “no longer stipulates inclusion of a visible indication.” Several of his 17 specimens “had very little information on the significance of the indicating light,” and whatever information existed was printed on the back of a blister pack most buyers throw away.
He also drew the distinction this post is built around. A disconnector can do one of two things when the metal oxide varistors (MOVs) fail: disconnect only the failed component “but leave the load powered but unprotected,” or disconnect the load as well. The first kind turns your surge protector into a power strip without telling you. The second kind goes dark. Twenty-eight years later, that is still the fact most manuals leave out.

Eight names for the light that says the MOVs are alive: Protection Working, Protected, Protection Present, Surge Protected, Surge Protection Light, Protected LED, Protection light, Surge light. Three vocabularies for the wiring light: a green “good” light (Grounded, Line OK, Ground Indicator), a red “bad” light (Building Wiring Fault, Line Fault, Not Grounded), or both. Four brands have no wiring light at all. Martzloff’s complaint holds.
What the protection light is actually watching
The vendor that explains the circuit most plainly is Fellowes: “The surge light monitors the MOV to make sure that it is still able to divert power surges away from connected equipment.” The light is wired across the varistor path, so it goes dark when that path opens. APC adds a detail that surprises people: the connected equipment “is also protected even when the power switch is turned OFF,” because the MOVs sit ahead of the switch. Belkin ties the light to a specific part: “The Protected Light on the unit would be no longer lit if the fuse was blown,” meaning the thermal fuse that disconnects a failing MOV.
Two owner reports show the edges of that design. Kerry D. Wong’s 2018 teardown of a dead APC NET7 found no power at any outlet, a burnt solder joint on a coil, and the main 25 A fuse still intact; the NET7 series had been recalled in 2013, and it was the melted joint, not any protective part, that opened the circuit. On Tom’s Hardware in 2022 an owner of a Brennenstuhl strip asked about a flickering orange protection light; one reply said flicker means the protector “is toast,” another that “it happens with neon indicator bulbs,” and the light later went solid on its own. Both readings are plausible, which is exactly the problem with an unstandardized light.
What the ground or wiring-fault light is telling you
This light is about your wall, not the strip. Schneider’s APC FAQ lists three triggers: an overloaded neutral, defined as more than 5 V AC between neutral and ground; reversed hot and neutral; and a missing ground, including the three-prong-to-two-prong adapter people use in old buildings. Tripp Lite’s Isobar manual adds that a loose receptacle can light the fault LED, and that the detector “will not necessarily detect every possible type of fault.” The reverse case is real too: a 2013 Tom’s Hardware thread describes a Belkin showing “not grounded” in three different rooms, and the consensus was a defective strip rather than three bad outlets.
The warranty consequence is written into the documents. CyberPower: using the strip when the ground light is off “will void the warranty.” APC’s equipment protection policy requires that the wiring fault light not be illuminated. A missing ground also means the MOVs between line and ground have nowhere to send a surge. And CyberPower’s P6WSU manual introduces a collision: “If the grounded indicator turns off after a period of use, the surge protection has been depleted,” so on that model the ground light can also be an end-of-life light. Read your own manual; the colour alone does not settle it.
The question the lights do not answer
Of 12 brands, four state that outlets keep power after the MOVs fail: APC, Belkin, Tripp Lite (Isobar) and Amazon Basics, three of them with the same sentence in different typography, “will disconnect the surge protective component … but will maintain power to the load, now unprotected.” One states the opposite: GE/Jasco’s manual says power “will be permanently shut down to the outlets.” Tripp Lite’s Isobar manual documents both, a Protection Present light that goes out while you “may still use the unit,” and a Line Fault light with no power at the outlets that means “surge-suppression components have been compromised.” The remaining six documents tell you to replace the unit when the light goes out and say nothing about what the outlets do meanwhile.
A Hacker News commenter summarized the market in 2024: “Typically surge protectors have a little light to let you know if the surge circuitry is still good. Others will fail safe, meaning the[y] won’t power on if the circuitry is bad. Cheap ones may do neither.” The manuals I read agree with the first two categories and cannot rule out the third. If your strip is one of the “stays on” kind and it lives behind a desk, the light going out is an event nobody sees. The joule budget that I wrote about last week is consumed silently, and the only visible sign of its exhaustion is a small LED you have to go looking for.
A lit light is not proof of protection either. An electrician’s customer on the Mike Holt forum lost a TV, alarm panel and thermostat to a lightning event while the whole-house protector’s green light stayed on; the replies pointed out that MOVs “are less effective on the next hit, and less thereafter,” and that the light reports continuity, not remaining capacity. A second thread on the same forum describes a lost neutral that “blew a hole right through the back side” of a plug-in strip. Nothing on the front of a strip counts the hits it has taken.
What I would do with each light state
- Protection light off, outlets live. Every manual agrees: replace it. It is a power strip now. Unplug the sensitive load first; Amazon Basics also wants you to check the outlet wiring in this state, which no other vendor asks for.
- Protection light off, outlets dead. Check the strip’s breaker or switch (Amazon Basics: flip to RESET). If that does nothing, you have a GE-style shutdown or an Isobar-style compromised unit, and Tripp Lite says to call support rather than reuse it.
- Ground or wiring-fault light red. Test the outlet with a plug-in tester, then an electrician. Move the strip somewhere else in the meantime; two vendors void the connected-equipment warranty in this state, and the line-to-ground MOVs are idle without a ground.
- Light flickering. Neon indicators do this with age; LEDs generally do not. If it keeps flickering under load, treat it as the first case.
- All lights normal after a big event. The lights cannot tell you how much budget is left. After a nearby strike or a lost-neutral event, replace the strip anyway, as the Mike Holt threads and the joule post both conclude.
If you are choosing a strip on the strength of its indicators, the three-LED Isobar layout is the most informative of the twelve documents, because it separates “wiring good,” “wiring bad” and “protection present,” and its manual is the only one that describes a no-power failure state; the Isobar 6 Ultra is the plug-in model with that panel. The APC P11VNT3 has the two-light Protection Working / Building Wiring Fault pair and the clearest FAQ about what the red one means. The Belkin 12-outlet BE112230-08 uses Protected plus Not Grounded and is the brand whose FAQ says plainly that power continues after the MOV burns out. None of these is a usage report; I have not bought any of them, and the UPS-versus-strip question for my own Mac mini is still open on the UPS shortlist. For a 24/7 server the strip is the interim layer; what one power cut actually costs is the reason I keep coming back to the UPS instead.

What does “protected” mean on a surge protector?
The Protected (or Protection Working, Protection Present, Surge Protected) light monitors the metal oxide varistors that absorb surges. Lit means the MOV path is intact; off means it has opened, usually because a thermal fuse disconnected a failing MOV. In most brands the outlets keep supplying power in that state, so the strip is now an ordinary power strip and should be replaced.
What does “not grounded” mean on a surge protector?
The outlet the strip is plugged into has a wiring problem: a missing ground (including a 3-to-2 prong adapter), reversed hot and neutral, or more than about 5 V between neutral and ground. Why is my surge protector light on but there is no power?
First check the strip’s own circuit breaker or reset switch, which trips on overload independently of the surge circuit. If the breaker is fine and a red fault light is lit with dead outlets, Tripp Lite’s manual says the surge components were compromised and the unit should go to support. Some brands, GE/Jasco among them, deliberately cut power permanently when protection is exhausted; that is the design, and the fix is a new strip.
