Yes, a Stream Deck works on a Mac. What doesn't stay fixed is which macOS the Stream Deck app will install on. Elgato has moved that floor four times since 2022, and its own documents trail the installers. I pulled every macOS installer linked from Elgato's release notes, 49 builds from 4.4.2 to 7.6.0, and read the OS check each one runs. For ten builds, from 6.9.0 (May 2025) to 7.2.1 (January 2026), Elgato's notes and its requirements page say macOS 13 Ventura. The installers and the apps inside them ask for macOS 12.

What I didn't do: I don't own a Stream Deck, and I didn't install the app on the Mac mini that runs this business. I read the installer packages without running them. I don't have a Mac on macOS 12 either, so "the 7.2.1 installer accepts Monterey" is what its check says, not something I watched happen. Hardware and day-to-day behaviour come from Elgato's spec pages and from owner reports, and I say which each time.

How I read 49 installers without installing one

Elgato's help center runs on Zendesk, and its article API answers without a key. A search for Stream Deck release notes returns 51 articles, and 49 of them link a macOS .pkg. One of the other two is Windows-only and the other links no installer. A .pkg is a xar archive: a short header, a compressed table of contents, then the files. The OS check lives in a small file called Distribution, so three HTTP range requests per installer were enough to read it, without downloading 300-plus megabytes.

# header (28 bytes) -> TOC length; TOC (zlib XML) -> offset of "Distribution"
magic, hsize, ver, toc_len, _, _ = struct.unpack('>4sHHQQI', rng(0, 27))
toc = zlib.decompress(rng(hsize, hsize + toc_len - 1))
# then fetch heap_start + offset and gunzip it
grep "IC_CheckOS(IC_DISK_TYPE_DESTINATION,true,'12.0'" Distribution

For three builds (6.9.0, 7.2.1 and 7.6.0) I downloaded the whole package and read the app inside it: LSMinimumSystemVersion in Info.plist, the minos field the compiler writes into the main binary, and the version of the Qt framework Elgato bundles.

Four floors in four years

The 49 installers fall into five blocks, and every block boundary is a point release, not a patch.

The OS check in each of 49 Stream Deck installers for macOS, read from the package's Distribution file on 2026-10-02. The dashed segment is the ten-build gap between the docs and the installers.

The 6.9 release notes, dated 6 May 2025, say "The minimum requirements for operating systems are changing with this release. macOS 11 Big Sur → macOS 13 Ventura". Elgato's system requirements page says the same: Big Sur for 6.5 through 6.8.1, Ventura "for Stream Deck 6.9 to the present". The 6.9.0 installer checks for 12.0, and so does every build after it up to 7.2.1. The 13.0 check first shows up in 7.3.0, released in March 2026.

It isn't only the installer script. Inside the 6.9.0 and 7.2.1 packages, the app's Info.plist says LSMinimumSystemVersion 12.0, and the arm64 slice of the main binary was built with minos 12.0. In 7.6.0 both say 13.0. The bundled Qt framework changes in step: 6.9.0 ships Qt 6.8.2 and 7.2.1 ships Qt 6.9.3, both built for macOS 12. 7.6.0 ships Qt 6.11.1, built for 13. Qt's own platform page lists macOS 13 or higher for Qt 6.11, against macOS 12 for Qt 6.9. I didn't download 7.3.0, so I can't say which Qt version moved the floor.

The practical version, if your Mac can't update past a given macOS: on Catalina the newest installer that accepts you is 6.4.1. On Big Sur it's 6.8.1, and on Monterey it's 7.2.1. Elgato links older builds from the requirements page. Two smaller findings: the 6.0.0 installer declared hostArchitectures="x86_64" only, so it needed Rosetta on Apple silicon. 6.0.1 added arm64, which matches its release note. And the download grew from 88.9 MB (4.4.2) to 361.9 MB (7.6.0).

What the app does on a Mac once it's in

The 7.6.0 app is 755 MB on disk, and 522 MB of that is QtWebEngineCore.framework, an embedded Chromium. That puts a number on a January 2026 Hacker News post whose author built a utility to quit the app whenever the device was unplugged: "The Stream Deck app has to be running for the hardware to work. That app? Not light." The keys do nothing without the app.

The app starts itself through a LaunchAgent bundled inside it, com.elgato.StreamDeck.trampoline, with RunAtLoad on and a KeepAlive rule that relaunches it if it exits with an error. A LaunchAgent runs inside a logged-in user session, which is the difference I wrote up in LaunchAgent vs LaunchDaemon. If your Mac reboots to a FileVault login screen, nothing on the Stream Deck works until someone signs in. That is how my own agents stalled for 92 hours after an unattended reboot. The auto-start path also has a recent bug. In elgatosf/streamdeck#154 (April 2026), a Mac Studio owner on macOS 26.4.1, the same build my Mac mini runs, reports that after a cold boot the auto-started app delivers Stream Deck+ dial turns about two seconds late. A manual quit and relaunch fixes it. Their bisection puts the regression in 7.0, and Elgato escalated it.

Permissions are where "hotkeys not working on Mac" comes from. Elgato's Mojave article says Hotkey and Text actions do nothing until Stream Deck is allowed under Accessibility. The 7.6.0 Info.plist carries eight more privacy prompts (camera, microphone, contacts, calendars, reminders, photos, location, AppleEvents), and every one reads "A Stream Deck plugin wants to…". A plugin's request reaches you under Stream Deck's name. Two other owner reports worth knowing: in elgatosf/streamdeck#140, a plugin polling every five seconds grew the host app by about 1 GB an hour on macOS 26.3, until the developer cached its settings. And a 2023 HN comment describes a Stream Deck macOS wouldn't recognise on a USB-C cable that worked on the bundled USB-A cable with an adapter.

Which Stream Deck for a Mac

Every model uses the same app, so the macOS floor above applies to all of them. The difference is the hardware and how new an app it needs. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. I haven't used either model below. The specs are from Elgato's device comparison, and the prices were read on Amazon's US store on 2026-10-02.

The Stream Deck MK.2 has 15 LCD keys and was $119.99. It's the default 15-key model, and nothing about it needs a recent app. The Stream Deck Neo has 8 keys, two touch points and a small Infobar display, and was $78.99. The Neo arrived with app 6.6 (April 2024), so it needs Big Sur at minimum. The Infobar became something you can put actions on only in 7.6 (September 2026), so that feature needs Ventura.

7.6 is also where Elgato started pitching the Neo at people like me. Its new ChatGPT & Codex plugin puts agent status on the Infobar, and the release notes say it lets you "know the moment your AI agent needs you". The cheaper version of that idea has a mixed record. One HN commenter set up an old Stream Deck for the same job and "stopped using it after a few days". My agents tell me they're stuck through a Telegram message, which needs no app running on the Mac. If you want a physical surface on a Mac mini that runs agents around the clock, the FileVault caveat above matters more than the key count.

Elgato sells more for the Mac desk than this. Its capture cards have their own macOS story in capture cards compatible with Mac, and if you're looking at other USB controllers, best controller for Mac lists the 214 game controller IDs macOS recognises.

FAQ

Does Stream Deck work on Mac?

Yes. Every Stream Deck model uses the same Stream Deck app, which Elgato builds for macOS on both Intel and Apple silicon. Since version 6.0.1 the installer runs natively on Apple silicon. The current app, 7.6.0, requires macOS 13 Ventura or later. Older Macs can use older versions of the app.

Which Stream Deck version works on macOS 12 Monterey?

Elgato documents macOS 13 for version 6.9 and later, but the installers for 6.9.0 through 7.2.1 check for macOS 12.0, and the apps inside declare 12.0 as their minimum. 7.2.1 is the newest installer that accepts Monterey. On macOS 11 Big Sur the newest is 6.8.1, and on 10.15 Catalina it is 6.4.1.

Why are Stream Deck hotkeys not working on Mac?

Hotkey and Text actions simulate key presses, which macOS blocks until the app is allowed under System Settings, Privacy & Security, Accessibility. Turn Stream Deck on in that list, then quit and relaunch the app. Plugins that need the camera, microphone or AppleEvents also ask for permission under the Stream Deck app's name.

Method: on 2026-10-02 I listed Elgato's Stream Deck release notes through the Zendesk help-center API (51 articles; 49 link a macOS installer, 4.4.2 to 7.6.0) and read each installer's Distribution file with HTTP range requests, recording the IC_CheckOS minimum, hostArchitectures and installKBytes. Download sizes are the servers' Content-Length headers. For 6.9.0, 7.2.1 and 7.6.0 I downloaded the full package, expanded it with pkgutil --expand and read Info.plist, otool -l (LC_BUILD_VERSION) and the bundled QtCore version. Nothing was installed, and no build was run on macOS 12. The "documented" column comes from the 6.0 and 6.9 release notes and the system requirements page as read that day. Owner reports are two GitHub issues on elgatosf/streamdeck and three Hacker News comments. Prices and stock were read on amazon.com with a New York delivery address on 2026-10-02.
