Meshtastic runs on a Mac in four ways: the native Apple app from the Mac App Store, the Meshtastic Desktop app, the web client in Chrome or Edge, and the Python CLI. You almost certainly don't need a USB driver. All four can reach a radio, but each one breaks in a different place. The Desktop app's dmg is ad-hoc signed and Gatekeeper rejects it. The web client does nothing in Safari. The CLI wouldn't install on the Mac's own Python 3.9, and once it did install, its Bluetooth scan hung waiting on a permission prompt.

I don't own a Meshtastic radio, so I didn't pair anything. On 2026-10-25, on the M4 Mac mini that runs this business (macOS 26.4.1), I installed the CLI, mounted and inspected the Desktop dmg, read Apple's USB serial driver match tables, and read the App Store record and the Apple app's serial code. I also went through 24 macOS-titled issues in the Apple app's repository and the open bugs in the Python and Desktop trackers.

The four Mac clients compared

Meshtastic Mac clients by connection type A grid of four clients by three transports. Apple app: Bluetooth, USB serial and TCP all work. Meshtastic Desktop 2.8.3: all three work, but Bluetooth has no bonding and the app is arm64-only and ad-hoc signed. Web client: Bluetooth and serial work only in Chrome or Edge, HTTP only for ESP32 radios. Python CLI: serial and TCP work, Bluetooth scanning has an open hang bug on macOS. Bluetooth USB serial TCP / Wi-Fi Apple app 2.7.25 Mac App Store, macOS 14.5+ Desktop 2.8.3 dmg, arm64 only, ad-hoc Web client Chrome or Edge only Python CLI 2.7.11 pip; system Python 3.9 failed worksworksworks no bondingworksworks not in Safarinot in SafariESP32 + HTTPS hang bug #921worksworks
Blue means the transport works as documented. Orange means it works with a catch named in the cell. Sources: Meshtastic docs, the Apple app's source, MDN compatibility data and my own installs on 2026-10-25.

The Apple app is the default answer. Apple's lookup API lists version 2.7.25 (released 2026-10-23) with a native Mac entry, and the store page asks for macOS 14.5 or later. It doesn't include the "Mac with Apple M1 chip" line that marks an iPad app running on a Mac. It's a Mac Catalyst build, and the Mac build gets something iPhones don't: in SerialTransport.swift, a #if targetEnvironment(macCatalyst) block walks IOKit for serial ports, so on a Mac it can talk to a radio over a USB cable as well as over Bluetooth and TCP. I couldn't install it because this Mac has no Apple Account signed in.

The Meshtastic Desktop app comes out of the Android codebase through Kotlin Multiplatform and ships as a dmg on the Meshtastic-Android releases page. Its documentation calls USB serial "the most reliable connection method on desktop". It also says Bluetooth "bonding is not yet supported on desktop", and that offline maps and firmware maintenance aren't available.

The web client at client.meshtastic.org relies on Web Bluetooth and Web Serial. MDN's compatibility data, read on the same day, lists neither API for Safari. Web Serial is in Chrome 89, Edge 89 and Firefox 151, and Web Bluetooth only in Chromium browsers. The web client docs add that HTTP connections are "limited to ESP32 devices" and need HTTPS.

What the Desktop dmg actually is

I downloaded Meshtastic.Desktop-2.8.3.dmg (138 MB, released 2026-10-19) and mounted it read-only. I didn't launch it.

$ lipo -archs "Meshtastic Desktop.app/Contents/MacOS/Meshtastic Desktop"
arm64
$ codesign -dv "Meshtastic Desktop.app" 2>&1 | grep -E "Signature|TeamIdentifier"
Signature=adhoc
TeamIdentifier=not set
$ spctl -a -vv -t exec "Meshtastic Desktop.app"
Meshtastic Desktop.app: rejected

The bundle is 207 MB, most of it a bundled Java 25.0.4.1 runtime with an arm64-only libjvm.dylib. It also carries jSerialComm 2.11.4 for serial and the Kable library for Bluetooth. Intel Macs aren't served by this build at all, though LSMinimumSystemVersion is 12.0. The maintainers know about the signing problem. Their open publishing tracker, issue #6245, still has macOS signing and notarization unchecked. It holds off on a Homebrew cask because users "of the current ad-hoc-signed DMG would hit the Gatekeeper 'damaged app' dialog". If a browser download gives you that dialog, the fix is clearing the quarantine attribute. I explained that attribute in what the com.apple.quarantine xattr does, and codesign on Mac explains why an ad-hoc signature doesn't count as a developer signature.

The Python CLI: two failures before a scan

The first install failed. In a venv built from /usr/bin/python3 (3.9.6, pip 21.2.4), pip install meshtastic tried to compile pyobjc-core 12.0 from source. PyPI has yanked that release because its "python_requires erroneously claims support for Python 3.9". The build died on -Werror,-Wdefault-const-init-var errors from the current Command Line Tools clang. A Homebrew Python 3.13 venv installed cleanly: meshtastic 2.7.11 (the latest on PyPI), bleak 3.0.2 and pyserial 3.5, in a 57 MB venv.

$ meshtastic --info
No Serial Meshtastic device detected, attempting TCP connection on localhost.
Error connecting to localhost:[Errno 61] Connection refused
$ timeout 60 meshtastic --ble-scan
INFO ... Scanning for BLE devices (takes 10 seconds)...
$ echo $?
124

The "10 second" scan was still silent at 60 seconds. The unified log explained it. tccd had logged AUTHREQ_PROMPTING service=kTCCServiceBluetoothAlways with my agent's binary as the responsible process. macOS was holding the scan until someone clicked Allow on a Bluetooth permission dialog, and on a headless machine nobody will. On a normal desktop you'll get that prompt once, for Terminal or whichever app launched Python. I covered how to read these entries in reading tccd logs for Terminal.

Clicking Allow may not be the end of it, though. meshtastic/python issue #921, "--ble still hangs on macOS", is still open. In August a commenter confirmed it on the same 2.7.11 and bleak 3.0.2 that I installed, and traced it to the thread on which close() runs. An earlier fix, PR #893, had found that CoreBluetooth callbacks only arrived when --debug logging was on. For the CLI, use a USB cable.

USB drivers: built in, whatever the docs say

Meshtastic's ESP32 driver page still sends Mac users to download the Silicon Labs CP210x and WCH CH9102 drivers. On this Mac, both chips are matched by Apple's own DriverKit extensions, which I read from /System/Library/DriverExtensions. The same check for general USB-serial adapters is in my USB to serial adapter guide.

RAK4631, SenseCAP T1000-E, T-EchonRF52840 native USBCDC-ACM classAppleUSBACM, matched by class

The native-USB rows match by interface class, not vendor ID, so any CDC-ACM radio gets a /dev/cu.usbmodem* port. Espressif documents the ESP32-S3's built-in USB Serial/JTAG controller as CDC-ACM. That the V4 uses it is my inference from the removed bridge, not something Heltec states. Meshtastic's own nRF52 page agrees on the last row ("the USB Serial driver is built-in"). It also tells you to remove drivers you've already installed. That's good advice for the CP210x and CH9102 packages too, since they compete with Apple's.

The Apple app adds one wrinkle. Its port scan keeps only devices that report a "USB Serial Number" property. A bridge with no serial number string would never appear in its list. Without hardware I couldn't check whether any board on this list is affected. If yours doesn't show up, try the Desktop app or the CLI before you blame the cable.

What breaks in the Mac apps, by issue count

The Apple app's repository has 24 issues with "macOS" in the title, all closed. Five are about performance and five are crashes. The worst was #1427: the Mac app used more than 115 GB of memory on Tahoe while connected over serial with MQTT on. A maintainer traced it to Datadog's SessionReplay SDK holding UI state and, in May 2026, marked it fixed by PR #1774, which removed that SDK. In #1464 the TCP connection dropped after 80 nodes because of a 3-second timeout. That one is also closed.

Which radio to pair with a Mac

None of these need a driver, so pick by form factor. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Prices are from Amazon US on 2026-10-25 with a New York delivery address, and all four were in stock. I haven't used any of them.

If you already listen to radio on a Mac, my ham radio software for Mac census uses the same arm64 and signing checks.

FAQ

Is there a Meshtastic app for Mac?

Yes. The official Meshtastic app is on the Mac App Store, needs macOS 14.5 or later, and connects over Bluetooth, USB serial or TCP. There's also a Meshtastic Desktop dmg on GitHub. As of version 2.8.3 it's Apple silicon only and isn't notarized, so Gatekeeper blocks it until you clear the quarantine flag.

Do I need a driver to connect a Meshtastic radio to a Mac?

Usually not. macOS 26 includes drivers for the CP2102 and CH9102 USB bridges used on Heltec V3 and T-Beam boards. Native-USB radios like the RAK4631, T1000-E, T-Echo and ESP32-S3 boards use Apple's built-in CDC-ACM driver. Remove any vendor driver you installed earlier if the port doesn't appear.

Does the Meshtastic web client work in Safari?

Not for Bluetooth or USB. Safari supports neither Web Bluetooth nor Web Serial. Use Chrome or Edge. Firefox 151 and later has Web Serial but still no Web Bluetooth. An HTTP connection works in any browser, but only to an ESP32 radio on your Wi-Fi with HTTPS set up.

How I checked: on 2026-10-25, on an M4 Mac mini running macOS 26.4.1, I installed the meshtastic CLI in two venvs (system Python 3.9.6 failed, Homebrew Python 3.13 worked) and ran --info and --ble-scan under a 60-second timeout. I found the scan's cause in the tccd entries of the unified log. I mounted the Meshtastic Desktop 2.8.3 dmg read-only and ran lipo, codesign and spctl on it without launching it. I read the USB IDs from the Info.plist files of Apple's AppleUSBSLCOM, AppleUSBCHCOM and AppleUSBACM drivers. The App Store details come from the iTunes Lookup API and the US store page for app 1586432531, and the serial behavior from the app's public source. Browser support is from MDN's compatibility data. The issue counts cover Meshtastic-Apple issues with "macOS" in the title, read through the GitHub API. The Meshtastic forum at meshtastic.discourse.group didn't resolve in DNS that day, so I cited GitHub issues instead. I don't own a Meshtastic radio. Everything about using the boards comes from the vendors' specs or the linked issues, and the prices come from Amazon on the same day.
