Mac Mini M4 Under Desk Mount: 5 of 16 Name the Button
The Mac mini mount with the most ratings in my census has 1,479 of them, a 4.6-star average, and a title that ends with “Does Not Work with 2024 M4 Mac Mini.” It is HumanCentric’s older molded sleeve, and it still shows up next to M4 listings. One of its reviewers put the problem in a sentence: it “does not fit newest mac mini power button, we had to drill them out.” That is the first thing to know about shopping for a Mac mini M4 under desk mount. In my census, 1,479 of the 2,344 ratings belong to a mount for a different computer.
So on 2026-09-28 I read 17 Amazon listings from the first results page for “mac mini m4 under desk mount” plus the vendor stores for Sonnet, HIDEit and HumanCentric, and normalized them by material, how they attach, whether the seller says anything about the bottom power button, price and the share of 1- and 2-star ratings. I own none of these mounts. Every product sentence below is a spec sheet, a listing or another owner’s report, and I say which.
Why old Mac mini mounts don’t fit the M4
Apple’s 2024 Mac mini spec page gives the M4 as 5.0 by 5.0 by 2.0 inches (12.7 cm square, 5.0 cm tall), 0.67 kg for the M4 and 0.73 kg for the M4 Pro. The 2023 model is 7.75 inches square and 1.41 inches tall. A sleeve cut for the old one is 7 cm too wide and 1.4 cm too short for the new one, and its button cutout sits on the back edge, where the M4 no longer has a button. The 2026 M6 and M5 Pro use the same 5-inch enclosure as the M4, which HIDEit’s listing states outright and which I checked against Apple’s pages when I wrote about rack-mounting the Mac mini.
Both HumanCentric pages carry the warning in their own copy: the 2024 part (101-2116) “will not work with 2023 Mac Mini or older,” and the old part (101-2010) “will not work with the 2024 M4.” On 2026-09-28 the new one was sold out on humancentric.com at $12.99 and down to “Only 5 left” on Amazon at $9.99, while the old one was in stock at $14.99. If a search sorts by review count, the wrong one wins.

Prices are Amazon’s as of 2026-09-28 unless marked direct; the page rendered with a Korean delivery address, so I read price, rating and the add-to-cart button, not delivery dates. “Button named” means the listing or the vendor’s own page says something about the power button. Five of the 16 M4 mounts do. Sonnet’s product page promises access to “ports and power switch,” and 9to5Mac’s review describes “a cutout for the power button on the bottom.” Spigen’s bullet says you can “turn on your Mac mini M4 without turning it upside down.” The other eleven are silent, which is not the same as blocked, but you are buying on a photo.
Tape is where the bad reviews collect
Three mounts ship double-sided tape as an alternative to screws. Their low-star shares are 7, 9 and 17 percent, an average of 11. The 13 screw-only M4 mounts average 3.8 percent, and eight of them are at 3 percent or under. That is 16 listings and some of them have six ratings, so I read it as a pattern worth checking, not a finding. The reviews say what the pattern is about. On the molded mount, Amazon’s own review summary counts 19 customers mentioning the adhesive, 6 positive and 13 negative, and the individual reviews read like this: “I just used the adhesive backing it came with and it stuck on very well, or so I thought,” and “the Holder is fine, the adhesive failed after a month.”
The mechanism is simple arithmetic rather than anything I measured. Under a desk, 0.67 to 0.73 kg of computer hangs from the tape, so the tape is peeled continuously instead of sheared, and the load stays on all day while the fan cycles and the desk gets bumped. A strip that holds a phone stand on a wall does not have to do that. If a mount offers both, use the screws.
Upside down is fine; covering the base is the risk
The M4 takes air in and pushes it out through the ring around its bottom, which is why owners asked early whether hanging it upside down would cook it. The answer on Apple Community in November 2024 was two words, “Yes, fine,” and on Mac-Forums one member summed up the market: brackets “all mount it basically front facing down.” An under-desk sleeve holds the top against the desk and leaves the base facing the floor, which is the same airflow as sitting on a desk, flipped. My own fan logs from the cooling-stand test showed this machine’s fan pinned at 999 RPM and zero thermal-pressure events over 15 days, so an open base under a desk is not where I would worry.
What I would worry about on my own machine is the radio. This Mac mini runs on Wi-Fi, not cable: system_profiler SPAirPortDataType reported 802.11ax on channel 149 at −43 dBm signal and −94 dBm noise today, and en0 is inactive. Sonnet’s listing says its bracket leaves the plastic base exposed “where its antennas are housed,” and 9to5Mac repeated that. A full steel tray that closes over the bottom, or a steel desk above the metal top, is the one layout I would test with system_profiler before and after. How much the button matters under a desk
Less than the forum threads suggest, and less every release. Apple’s support note 125517 adds a “Start up when power is connected” setting for a Mac mini introduced in 2024 or later, on macOS 26.5 or later. With it set to Always, a smart plug or a power strip switch is the power button. Mine is on 26.4.1, below that floor, so the menu isn’t there; pmset -g reports the older autorestart 1, which I covered in the power-failure post.
The boot record on this machine makes the same point. last reboot lists 10 boots since the log began on 2026-04-17, and the only one I know needed a person in the room, on 08-28, needed them for the FileVault password, not the button. The case where you do need the button is recovery: holding it to reach startup options. Jeff Geerling, building rack shelves, wrote on HN that “the fact I have to mess with 3D printing just to hit a power button is silly,” and another HN owner reported breaking the power button cable while opening an M4 for an SSD swap; the cable only comes with a replacement bottom plate. If recovery is something you do, buy one of the five mounts that name the button or leave a finger’s gap below the rear-left corner.

For a desk the mini hangs under and nobody touches: a screw-mounted steel or aluminum sleeve with an open base. The Spigen VESA mount names the button, has 76 ratings, and rounds to 0 percent 1- and 2-star. PUTORSEN has the most ratings of any mount that fits (141) at $15.29, with 6 percent low and no button claim.
For a shared office or a desk that people walk past, the security mounts: the Sonnet MacCuff mini at $54.99 with a padlock bar and a documented button cutout, or the HIDEit Mini4 in 16-gauge steel at $37.99, which is $35 on HIDEit’s own store. Both have single-digit rating counts, so there is little owner data behind them yet. Behind a monitor on an arm, check the spacers: the mount and the arm share the same four VESA holes, and in their bullets only Fasgear (“flat or recessed”) and Monzlteck (spacers included) address recessed holes. Skip anything that doesn’t say M4, M5 Pro or M6 in the title, however many stars it has, and skip the tape.

Can you mount a Mac mini M4 upside down?
Yes. It has a fan and takes air in and out through its base, so orientation matters less than keeping that base open. Under-desk mounts hold the top against the desk and leave the base facing the floor.
Will an older Mac mini mount fit the M4?
No. The 2018–2023 mini is 7.75 inches square and 1.41 inches tall; the M4 is 5 inches square and 2 inches tall. HumanCentric’s pre-2024 mount says in its title that it does not work with the M4.
Do I need to reach the power button under a desk?
Rarely. On macOS 26.5 or later, a 2024-or-later Mac mini can start whenever power is connected, so a smart plug works as the switch. You still need the button to reach startup options for recovery.
