Mac Mini M4 Dock With 2.5GbE: 8 of 19, Half Are USB Inside
The Ethernet port on my Mac mini M4 has moved zero bytes since the machine last booted. That was 2026-08-28 at 21:26; this morning, 9.485 days later, netstat -ib still shows en0 at 0 in and 0 out, and the Wi-Fi interface that carries everything averaged 0.284 Mbps over the same stretch. That is 0.0113% of a 2.5 Gb/s link. I am the wrong person to buy a dock with 2.5GbE, and I say so up front because the rest of this post is about people who are not me.
The question itself got sharper two weeks ago. Apple's M6 Mac mini announcement lists 2.5Gb Ethernet as standard, with 10Gb as the option, and it ships 2026-09-22. So "Mac mini dock with 2.5GbE" is now a question only M4 and older owners ask. Apple's M4 spec page puts it plainly: a Gigabit Ethernet port, configurable at order time to 10Gb Ethernet, which is Nbase-T and negotiates 1, 2.5, 5 and 10 Gb/s. If you did not tick that box, you have a 1 Gb/s port and three ways to get past it: a USB adapter, a dock, or a newer Mac. I already wrote up the adapter route and the 70-entry driver table that decides whether one works. This post is the dock route.
What I collected
On 2026-08-24 I normalized 15 dock and hub spec sheets for the docking-station-versus-hub question, but I recorded the upstream link, the charging wattage and the price, and never the Ethernet column. Today I went back for it. Six of the fifteen URLs had died in two weeks: CalDigit had moved both TS5 pages, Kensington and Sonnet had restructured, Satechi's Mac mini hub had a new slug, and UGREEN's Revodok Pro 109 was gone from the US catalog entirely (its Shopify products.json, 250 items, has only a Turkish-language listing left). I found new URLs for all but the UGREEN, added four products people actually type this query for, and ended with 18 manufacturer pages plus one product that exists only as an Amazon listing.
For each one I wrote down four things from the vendor's own page: the upstream link, the Ethernet speed, the name of the Ethernet controller chip if the vendor publishes it, and whether that chip hangs off PCIe or USB. The last column is the whole point, and it is the one almost nobody fills in.

Eight of nineteen have a port rated 2.5GbE or better. Six have Gigabit. Five have no Ethernet at all, and that group includes every product with "Hub" in its name plus Satechi's Mac-mini-shaped stand. Of the eight, two are confirmed PCIe, four are confirmed USB, and two vendors do not say. Sonnet's original Echo 11 is Gigabit; there is a separate Echo 11 HDMI SKU with 2.5GbE that I did not include because the August set had the original.
Thunderbolt on the outside does not mean PCIe on the inside
Seven of the eight 2.5GbE products connect to the Mac over Thunderbolt, and my assumption going in was that a Thunderbolt dock puts its network controller on the PCIe lanes that Thunderbolt tunnels. Three of them do not. OWC's Thunderbolt 5 Dock support manual names the Ethernet chipset as Realtek RTL8156B. Plugable's TBT4-UDZ spec table lists the same part, RTL8156B, under Chipset. Beelink's spec sheet for the EX Mate mini goes further and states the bus: "Ethernet Adapter Chipset: Realtek RTL8156BG, Interface: USB 3.0". The RTL8156 family is a USB 3 network controller; it is the chip inside most USB-C 2.5GbE dongles, which CalDigit's own TS4 page prices at "anywhere between $20 – $55". Inside these docks it sits behind the dock's internal USB hub, and the Thunderbolt link only carries it as USB traffic.
CalDigit is the exception, and it says so in an unusual way. The TS4 product page carries this sentence: "Ethernet is only supported on Thunderbolt based hosts as well as USB4 hosts that support PCIe." A USB-attached NIC would work on any USB-C host, so that restriction is a confession that the TS4's controller is on PCIe. Dan Charlton's 2022 teardown found the Intel i225 on a secondary board fed by a "50-pin connector (PCIe x1 channel to secondary PCB)". The TS5 listing on CalDigit's own store spells it out as "1 x 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet (PCIe Based)". The TS5 Plus, with 10GbE, says nothing either way, and Kensington publishes a speed table (10, 100, 1000, 2500 Mbps) with no chip.
Why the bus matters on a Mac
On macOS the two paths land in different drivers, and I can read the table on my own machine. On this Mac mini running 26.4.1, AppleUSBRealtek8153Patcher.kext has 26 vendor personalities and its Realtek entry lists product ID 0x8156, the RTL8156, alongside 0x8153. There is no Realtek vendor driver anywhere in /System/Library/Extensions; the patcher's job, as far as I can tell from its matching layer and the Linux r8153_ecm.c source, is to steer the device into its CDC configuration so Apple's generic com.apple.driver.usb.cdc.ncm picks it up. I laid that out in the adapter post and nothing has changed in the table since 2026-08-14. The PCIe side is different: three in-box DriverKit extensions (AppleEthernetE1000, AppleEthernetIXGBE, AppleEthernetIXL) match on Intel's PCI vendor ID 0x8086, and CalDigit's own troubleshooting article says the TS4 port appears as a "Thunderbolt Ethernet Slot" network service. I do not own a TS4 and cannot tell you which of those three extensions binds an i225, so I will not.
Whether the class-driver path actually costs throughput is contested, and I want to put both sides down rather than pick one. In a TP-Link community thread on the UE302C, an RTL8156 adapter, a Mac mini M2 owner reports macOS handling it "only" through com.apple.driver.usb.cdc.ncm at roughly 940 to 1100 Mbps against about 2,100 on Windows; TP-Link staff replied on 2025-10-13 that no Apple silicon driver is planned and locked the thread. Against that, a 2022 test I cited in August got 2.27 Gb/s out of the same chip on the same class driver when the dongle sat on a 10 Gb/s port, and between 0.87 and 1.64 Gb/s when it sat on a 5 Gb/s dock port. The variable that moved the number was the port the adapter hung from, which is exactly the thing a dock decides for you.
Then there is the thread that is this query's actual origin story. In March 2026 a MacRumors member posted "MAC Mini M4 Ethernet capped using docking station": the built-in 2.5GbE port on an OWC Thunderbolt 5 dock delivered "1g down speed" on a Mac mini M4, while a separate 2.5G USB adapter plugged into the same dock's USB-C port delivered about 1,800 Mbps. Re-imaging the Mac changed nothing, the dock has no macOS driver to install, and fourteen posts later the thread is unresolved with OWC's answer pending. One reply guesses a chip and driver problem; another, "One chip obviously has full macOS support, the other doesn't." I cannot resolve it from outside either. What I can add is the fact the thread never states: per OWC's manual, that built-in port is an RTL8156B.
Plugable, to its credit, writes the uncertainty into the spec: "Gigabit Ethernet (2.5Gbps*) *Actual Ethernet port speed determined by OS version and host model." I have not seen another dock vendor footnote its own Ethernet number that way. CalDigit's PCIe path has its own known failure, also documented by the vendor: the port stops taking a DHCP lease, which CalDigit attributes to a stale macOS network service or Energy Efficient Ethernet negotiation, and the fix is to delete the "Thunderbolt Ethernet Slot" service, recreate it, and pick a manual speed and duplex that does not include the energy-efficient-ethernet option. A PCIe NIC gets you a real driver. It does not get you out of reading the KB.
The Mac-mini-shaped ones
Two products in the table are built to sit under or over the mini, and they are the ones this query is usually about. Beelink's EX Mate mini is a Thunderbolt 5 dock with one or two M.2 slots, SD, USB-A and 2.5GbE, at $119 without a drive on Beelink's store today (AppleInsider's November 2025 review quoted $139 for Prime members and $189 otherwise on Amazon, so check which price you are looking at). Beelink is the only vendor in the set to state the Ethernet bus outright, and the answer is USB 3.0. Owners in a 25-post MacRumors thread report the parts a spec sheet leaves out: the bottom-mount orientation with the included C-shaped connector "really blocks the Mac's power button", the unit is "warm to the touch after several speed tests", and one buyer who ordered a $274 pre-filled unit shipped from China had DHL hold it for $62.86 in duties. AppleInsider measured about a 15% Wi-Fi hit with the mini stacked on it, which matches the hub-under-the-mini interference reports I collected in August. The first reply in that thread is also worth sitting with: "I'm not sure what the point of Ethernet is; the mini already has that." For a Gigabit user it is a fair question.
ORICO's MiniLink M48PR is the cheaper shape: a USB-C 10 Gb/s stand with two 10 Gb/s USB-A ports, a 2.5GbE jack, card slots and audio. Its Amazon title now reads "Compatible with Mac mini M6, M5 Pro, M4/M4 Pro". I could not find it on ORICO's own site; the company's Shopify catalog has 181 products today and this is not one of them, so every spec I have for it comes from the retail listing, and it names no chip. With a USB-C upstream the NIC has to be USB-attached, which puts it on Path B with the Beelink.
The arithmetic for an M4 owner
Line the options up by what you pay for the 2.5GbE alone. A USB-C adapter such as the Satechi 2.5GbE adapter, which names Mac mini on its own compatibility page, is $39.99 direct as of my August check. The Beelink EX Mate mini is $119 and gives you the same class of USB NIC plus an NVMe slot and a stand. The Plugable TBT4-UDZ at $289.99 and the OWC Thunderbolt 5 Dock are Thunderbolt docks with the same Realtek chip inside, so you are paying for the displays, the wattage and the ports, and the Ethernet is a bonus of dongle grade. The CalDigit TS4 at $379.99 is the cheapest product in the set where the vendor commits to PCIe. And the option nobody on the forums likes: Apple's 10Gb build-to-order, which a MacRumors poster put at "$100 to Apple" and which cannot be added after purchase. Past that, an M6 mini is $899 with 2.5GbE on the board.
If your traffic looks like mine, the answer is none of them. My wired port has read zero packets in every check since July and the agents this machine runs pull a few hundred kilobits a second on average. If you are actually saturating Gigabit, which means a NAS or a multi-gig ISP plan, then the question to ask a dock vendor is not "does it have 2.5GbE" but "is the controller on PCIe or USB", and in this set only CalDigit and Beelink answer it without a teardown. Everything else, including the switch on the other end, is the same shopping list it was before.

Does the Mac mini M4 have 2.5GbE built in?
No. Apple's spec sheet lists a Gigabit Ethernet port, configurable at purchase to 10Gb Ethernet (Nbase-T, which negotiates 1, 2.5, 5 and 10 Gb/s). The 10Gb option cannot be added later. The M6 Mac mini announced 2026-08-25 makes 2.5GbE standard.
Is a Thunderbolt dock's 2.5GbE port faster than a USB adapter on a Mac?
Only if the dock's controller is on PCIe. Of eight docks with 2.5GbE I checked, OWC's Thunderbolt 5 Dock, Plugable's TBT4-UDZ and Beelink's EX Mate mini use a USB-attached Realtek RTL8156B, the same chip family as a USB dongle, and macOS drives it with the generic CDC NCM class driver. CalDigit's TS4 and TS5 use a PCIe-attached controller.
Which Mac mini docks say whether their Ethernet is PCIe or USB?
Two of nineteen. CalDigit's TS5 listing reads "2.5 Gigabit Ethernet (PCIe Based)" and its TS4 page says Ethernet works only on hosts that support PCIe.
