Gaming Keyboard for Mac: 4 of 13 Configurators Skip Safari
Any USB gaming keyboard types on a Mac. It's a standard HID keyboard, and macOS needs no driver to read keys. The trouble starts when you want the gaming features: remapping, macros, rapid-trigger depth on magnetic switches, lighting, firmware updates. Those live in each maker's configuration software, and on 2026-10-04 I went through the current download and support pages of 13 gaming keyboard brands to see where that software runs. Three have no Mac version. Four now do the job in a web page, and that page won't open in Safari. Of the six with a native Mac app, only two run on any current Mac without a condition attached.
What I didn't do: I don't own any of these keyboards, and the Mac mini that runs this business has no keyboard attached. hidutil list on it shows 125 HID services and none on the keyboard usage page. Everything about a specific keyboard below comes from the maker's own page or an owner's thread, and I link each one. The macOS commands I ran on this machine (macOS 26.4.1).
Where each brand's keyboard software runs
I sorted each brand by where its keyboard software runs today: a native macOS app, a web configurator, or Windows only. Where the maker states an OS or chip floor, I wrote it down. For Logitech and SteelSeries I reused my readings of their Mac installers from the gaming headset for Mac census a day earlier.
The conditions are where buyers get caught. Razer Synapse for Mac "will only support Apple Silicon chip-based Mac that is running macOS 15 Sequoia and above", and its supported device list (updated 21-Aug-2026) names 14 keyboards: eight BlackWidow V4 variants, three Huntsman V3 Pro models, the Huntsman Signature Edition, the Joro and the Pro Type Ergo. ASUS's Armoury Crate Gear for Mac covers three keyboards (ROG Azoth Extreme, Azoth, Falchion RX Low Profile) and one mouse, on macOS 13.6 or later. Glorious's CORE page lists "macOS Big Sur - Sonoma, Apple M1+", which stops before macOS 15. SteelSeries said in 2026 that GG on macOS gets no new features or regular updates, and the GG 108.3.0 Mac binaries I read are Intel-only. The SteelSeries keyboard kernel extension in that package (37 keyboard matching entries) can't load on Apple silicon at all.
The unconditional two are Logitech G HUB and Corsair iCUE, whose help page asks for a 2015-or-newer Mac on macOS 12.7 or later.
Web configurators need Chrome, and WebKit just said no
Keychron, Akko, Wooting and Epomaker moved configuration into the browser. That uses WebHID, the API that lets a web page talk to a USB HID device, and the makers say so in plain terms. Keychron: "Please use the latest version of Chrome / Opera / Edge browser to open the Launcher." Akko's download page: "Mac: use Chrome only — Safari & Firefox not supported; Bluetooth customization & Audio Visualizer not supported". Wootility Web is "compatible with Chrome-based browsers like Chrome, Edge, Arc and Opera", and Epomaker's web driver "currently supports Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge only".
That isn't going to change on the Safari side. MDN's browser compatibility data marks WebHID as Chrome 89 and later, with Safari and Firefox unsupported. On 2026-09-14 WebKit posted its reasoning in its standards-position thread on WebHID, saying "on security the evidence against WebHID is more direct" than for WebUSB, Web Serial or Web Bluetooth. The issue was labeled position: oppose and closed on 2026-09-29. Mozilla marked WebHID position: negative back in 2021 in its own thread.
For a Mac owner this is a mild cost, not a dealbreaker: install Chrome, Edge or Arc, plug the keyboard in by cable, configure, and the settings stay on the keyboard. A Hacker News commenter describes exactly that with Wootility: remaps saved to the keyboard follow it between systems. It's also the only one of the three routes that doesn't depend on a vendor keeping a Mac app alive. Wooting and Epomaker hedge by shipping a Mac app as well.
Windows-only software, and the onboard-memory escape
HyperX says NGENUITY is "currently only available on Windows operating systems". Cooler Master's MasterPlus+ page offers only "Windows 10, 11". Redragon's FAQ is the most honest of the three: "The keyboard/mouse is compatible with Mac, but the software is not able to run on Mac system. Any profile of backlit and macro settings can be applied on Mac for using if it has been edited and saved on PC."
So these work on a Mac if you also own a Windows PC and the keyboard stores profiles onboard. Without the PC, you get the factory layout and whatever lighting the Fn shortcuts reach.
The Command and Option keys, and a USB-A trap
A keyboard built for Windows puts Alt next to the space bar and the Windows key outside it. macOS reads Alt as Option and the Windows key as Command, so your thumb finds Option where Command should be. Many gaming boards have a Mac mode switch or Fn shortcut (Glorious's GMMK 3 guide has a section on switching between Windows and macOS functions). If yours doesn't, Apple's Modifier Keys setting under System Settings, Keyboard, Keyboard Shortcuts swaps them per keyboard and remembers it.
The scriptable route is hidutil, documented in Apple's TN2450. Left Alt is HID usage 0xE2 and Left GUI (the Windows key) is 0xE3. Use --matching with the keyboard's vendor and product ID, or the swap hits every keyboard, including a MacBook's built-in one:
# find the keyboard's VendorID / ProductID
hidutil list | awk '$4 == 1 && $5 == 6'
# swap left Option and left Command on that keyboard only
hidutil property --matching '{"VendorID":0x046d,"ProductID":0xc33f}' --set \
'{"UserKeyMapping":[
{"HIDKeyboardModifierMappingSrc":0x7000000E2,"HIDKeyboardModifierMappingDst":0x7000000E3},
{"HIDKeyboardModifierMappingSrc":0x7000000E3,"HIDKeyboardModifierMappingDst":0x7000000E2}]}'
# check what is active; (null) means nothing
hidutil property --get UserKeyMapping
The IDs in that example are placeholders. On this Mac mini the first command prints nothing because no keyboard is connected, and the last one prints (null). TN2450 warns that a hidutil mapping is lost on restart "or if the keyboard service is removed (for example when the last keyboard is disconnected)". A wireless board that sleeps and drops off can lose it, so for a permanent swap the System Settings route is the safer one.
The other trap is the dongle. Logitech's G515 LIGHTSPEED TKL lists "Computer with USB-A port" as its requirement, and the M4 Mac mini has only USB-C and Thunderbolt ports. Budget for an adapter or a hub. I covered which hubs fit in USB hub for a Mac mini M4 server.
What owners report
- Razer's Mac list grows, but late. A Razer Insider thread from 2025-05-30 lists six products Synapse for Mac didn't support, including the BlackWidow V4 (RZ03-0469). That model is on the August 2026 list, so it took more than a year.
- Older Razer boards may never arrive. In a 2020 thread a BlackWidow Elite owner found only a legacy Mac driver that "will work up to macOS 10.14", and the Elite wasn't on its list either. It isn't on the 2026 list.
- G HUB on a Mac isn't trouble-free. In an August 2026 Hacker News thread about an open-source Logitech replacement, one owner recalls "a huge number of problems with it on MacOS" after buying a G502. Another notes that a device with onboard memory keeps working without the app, while one without it needs the app running in the background.
Which gaming keyboard for a Mac
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. I haven't used any of these keyboards. Prices and stock were read on Amazon's US store with a New York delivery address on 2026-10-04.
If you don't mind keeping Chrome around for setup, the Keychron K2 HE ($103.99, typical $129.99) is a 75% magnetic-switch board with rapid trigger. On paper it has a 1000 Hz wired polling rate, Bluetooth for three devices plus 2.4 GHz, and the Launcher web app for remapping. No Mac app can go stale on you, because there isn't one.
If you want a native Mac app, the Logitech G515 LIGHTSPEED TKL ($127.99, list $159.99) works with G HUB, which has no chip condition. Its own page lists macOS 12 or later. Remember the USB-A receiver if your Mac is a recent Mac mini.
The Razer BlackWidow V4 75% ($111.76, list $189.99, "Only 14 left" when I checked) is on Razer's Mac list as RZ03-0500. Buy it only if your Mac has Apple silicon and runs macOS 15 or later. On an Intel Mac, Synapse for Mac won't install.
I'd skip HyperX, Cooler Master and Redragon boards unless a Windows PC is also on your desk. For the rest of a Mac desk setup, see mouse for the Mac mini and, if you want Touch ID, a keyboard for the Mac mini with Touch ID.
FAQ
Do gaming keyboards work on a Mac?
Yes for typing. Any USB or Bluetooth gaming keyboard is a standard HID keyboard that macOS handles without a driver. What varies is the configuration software for macros, remapping, lighting and firmware. Of 13 brands checked on 2026-10-04, six have a native Mac app, four use a web configurator that needs Chrome or another Chromium browser, and three (HyperX, Cooler Master, Redragon) are Windows only.
Why doesn't Keychron Launcher work in Safari?
Keychron Launcher and similar web configurators use WebHID to talk to the keyboard. Only Chromium browsers such as Chrome, Edge, Opera and Arc implement it. Safari and Firefox do not, and WebKit formally recorded an "oppose" position on WebHID in September 2026. On a Mac, open the Launcher in Chrome or Edge with the keyboard connected by cable.
How do I swap Command and Option on a Windows gaming keyboard on Mac?
Use the keyboard's Mac mode switch or Fn shortcut if it has one. Otherwise open System Settings, Keyboard, Keyboard Shortcuts, Modifier Keys, choose the external keyboard, and set Option to Command and Command to Option. The setting is saved per keyboard. The hidutil command does the same but is lost on restart.

Method: on 2026-10-04 I read each brand's download or support page directly (curl with a Safari user agent) and quoted the OS and browser statements as written. Corsair's help article was read through its help-center API. Razer's live device list sits behind a bot check, so the counts come from the Wayback Machine capture of 2026-08-24, which shows "Updated: 21-Aug-2026". The Logitech and SteelSeries installer details are from my 2026-10-02 and 2026-10-03 readings of their Mac packages; nothing was installed. WebHID support is from MDN's browser-compat-data (api/HID.json) and the WebKit and Mozilla standards-positions issues via the GitHub API. I dropped NuPhy, Mountain and Ducky because I couldn't read an OS statement on their own pages. The hidutil output is from this Mac mini (Mac16,10, macOS 26.4.1). Demand signals are Google autocomplete counts from our demand.py script. Owner reports are two Razer Insider threads and three Hacker News comments.
