If you want a 3D mouse for a Mac, you are choosing a 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse and its 3DxWare driver. Without the driver, macOS treats the puck as a mouse pointer, and Blender's Mac code looks for one file path that only 3DxWare installs. So I took the driver apart. On 2026-10-24 I downloaded 3DxWare 10.8.12 for macOS, expanded its packages without installing them, and went through all 63 executables plus the app profiles it ships. I don't own a SpaceMouse. Everything about the installer below is my own reading of the files. How the hardware behaves comes from owner reports, linked where they appear.

Short version: the driver is notarized and almost all universal, and it supports macOS 12 through 26. It also adds a login item, a root boot job that puts a second IP address on your loopback interface, a DriverKit extension you have to approve, and a restart. That matters if you set up Macs the way I set up this one, with nothing running that I didn't put there.

Without the driver, it's a mouse pointer

Two owner reports, six years apart, describe the same behavior. In a 2020 Second Life bug, an owner on Big Sur with no 3Dconnexion driver installed says the macOS cursor jumps to the corner of the screen in whatever direction they push the cap, and the side buttons click whatever is under it. In ScanRuler issue #12, opened 2026-10-22, an owner on an M2 Pro Mac mini quit 3DconnexionHelper and 3DxNLServer to test something. Chrome then saw the device as a SpaceNavigator with six axes and two buttons (vendor 046d, product c626). Their Fusion setup also stopped working: "the SpaceMouse moves the mouse pointer instead."

Apps can't fill that gap on their own. Blender's macOS NDOF code calls dlopen() on one hard-coded path:

module = dlopen("/Library/Frameworks/3DconnexionClient.framework/3DconnexionClient",
                RTLD_LAZY | RTLD_LOCAL);

That is from GHOST_NDOFManagerCocoa.mm, last changed 2026-01-21. If the framework isn't there, Blender on a Mac doesn't see a 3D mouse. Linux users have the open-source spacenavd daemon. On a Mac, the 3Dconnexion driver is the only way in.

What the installer puts on a Mac

The download is 3DxWareMac_v10-8-12_r3901.dmg, 49,971,347 bytes. The package inside is signed with 3Dconnexion's Developer ID (team 9D93Y2RD6L), timestamped 2026-02-23, and spctl reports "Notarized Developer ID". Gatekeeper won't complain. The structure is unusual, though. The outer package holds one component, 3DxInstallCheck.pkg, and its payload is a checker app plus a second, complete installer. The outer postinstall script kills running 3Dconnexion processes, plus any process whose name contains "System Pref" or "System Sett". It then deactivates the old driver extension and runs installer -pkg on the inner package. Leave System Settings open while you install and it will be closed.

The inner package has 14 components, and every one is marked onConclusion="RequireRestart". Unpacked, the payloads come to about 123 MB:

Trainer, Viewer, Puzzle, Pairing, demos/Applications/3DconnexionPractice apps and the wireless pairing tool

The extension is the piece people expect least. Its Info.plist matches IOUserResources, not a 3Dconnexion vendor ID, so it doesn't bind to the SpaceMouse at all. It exists to inject keyboard and mouse events, and its usage string says "3Dconnexion Virtual Keyboard - adds support for modifier keys to 3DxWareMac". The helper reads the puck from user space. Because it is a DriverKit system extension, macOS only loads it after you approve it under System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions. If you never approve it, the driver is installed but won't work.

How 3DxWare 10.8.12 connects a SpaceMouse to Mac apps The SpaceMouse reaches 3DconnexionHelper over USB HID. The helper feeds desktop apps through the 3DconnexionClient and Navlib frameworks and feeds a DriverKit extension for virtual key presses. Browser apps connect to 3DxNLServer on 127.51.68.120, an address a root LaunchDaemon adds at boot. SpaceMouse USB / BT / receiver 3DconnexionHelper LaunchAgent, at login Client + Navlib frameworks Blender, Fusion, FreeCAD, Maya… DriverKit dext (you approve it) virtual keyboard and mouse 3DxNLServer on 127.51.68.120 Onshape and other browser apps Blue: desktop path. Orange: hardware and the browser path (root LaunchDaemon adds the loopback alias at boot).
What 3DxWare 10.8.12 installs, drawn from the package contents. Nothing here was run; the device never reaches an app without the helper.

If you keep a list of what starts at boot, you'll get one new LaunchAgent and one new LaunchDaemon. That split is the usual one, covered in LaunchAgent vs LaunchDaemon. The daemon is the odd part: a root job that does nothing except add a loopback address, so the browser server has its own IP.

Apple Silicon: 51 of 63 binaries are universal

I ran lipo -archs on every Mach-O file in the payloads and in the zipped helper and uninstaller apps. Of 63, 51 are universal (arm64 and x86_64) and 12 are Intel-only. All 12 Intel-only files are plug-ins for older host versions: Maya 2020, 2022 and 2023; Photoshop CC through CC 2017; SketchUp 2019 and 2020; Unreal Editor 4.27, 5.0 and 5.1. The plug-ins for Maya 2024 to 2027, SketchUp 2022 and 2024, Unreal 5.2 to 5.7, Photoshop 2021 and 2022 and every Cinema 4D version are universal. So are the helper, the extension and the preference pane. None of the current pieces needs Rosetta.

The 10.7.0 release notes (published 2022-01-13) list native Apple Silicon support, and the kernel extension was dropped in the same release. The current release notes list macOS 12 through 26 and 10.8.13 (2026-06-26) as the newest build. Its only listed change is 3DxMacCore 1.4.4. The ScanRuler reporter was on macOS 27.0.1 and said the SpaceMouse worked in other 3D apps, even though 27 isn't on the list yet.

Which Mac apps get a profile

The driver ships default settings for each app in 3DxDefaults.plist. There are 69 entries under 44 names. Leaving out 3Dconnexion's own demos and the three web entries leaves 36 distinct app bundle IDs. Among them: AutoCAD, Archicad, Blender, Cinema 4D, Fusion, FreeCAD, KiCad, Maya, MoI, PrusaSlicer, Rhino, Shapr3D, SketchUp, Unreal Editor, Vectorworks and ZBrush. A few aren't 3D tools at all, such as Excel, Word, Outlook, Acrobat and Safari, where the puck scrolls and zooms. If you're buying one for printing, note that PrusaSlicer is the only slicer on the list. Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer and Cura aren't in the defaults. That alone doesn't mean they ignore the device, since an app can talk to the Navlib framework itself, but nothing is preconfigured for them. The slicer comparison for 3D printers on Mac covers those apps.

Browser apps go through the 3DxNLServer path, and that's where owners report problems. One Hacker News commenter couldn't get their SpaceMouse working with Onshape "in various browsers on MacOS" and went back to Fusion. A reply said Firefox-based browsers failed and a Chromium browser worked. ScanRuler is a second case. That site reads the device through the browser's Gamepad API, and with the driver running Chrome's navigator.getGamepads() came back empty. The maintainer's diagnosis: "Safari doesn't expose this kind of device to web pages at all, and on Mac Chrome the 3Dconnexion driver most likely keeps the device to itself." So a web tool that works with a SpaceMouse on Windows may not see it on a Mac, and quitting the helper to fix that disconnects the desktop apps.

Which SpaceMouse to buy for a Mac

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Prices below are from amazon.com with a New York 10001 delivery address on 2026-10-24, and they will change. I haven't used any of these. Specs come from the listings, and the problems come from owner reports and 3Dconnexion's release notes.

ModelConnection (listing)PriceRatings
SpaceMouse Compact (3DX-700059)Wired USB, 2 buttons$171.001,048
SpaceMouse Wireless, Bluetooth Edition (3DX-700115)Wireless and USB-C, 2 buttons, up to 1 month per charge$189.00245
SpaceMouse Pro Wireless BTWireless and USB-C, 1100 mAh battery$313.0083

For one Mac on a desk, the Compact is the cheapest way to get the full driver. The cable also avoids the wireless pairing tool. Its Amazon listing still names macOS 10.10 to 10.14 as supported. That copy is old, and the driver page is what counts. If you want wireless, the Bluetooth Edition is only $18 more. One limit in the release notes applies to 3Dconnexion's wireless CadMouse, not the SpaceMouse: on recent macOS its buttons don't click through the Universal Receiver, so use Bluetooth or the cable. The Pro Wireless BT costs $142 more than the Compact. Its listing gives the battery size but no button count, so check 3Dconnexion's spec page before paying for buttons you may not map.

Whichever you buy, expect a restart, an extension approval prompt and two launchd jobs. If you later remove it, use 3Dconnexion's uninstaller app from the same package. Forgetting the receipts with pkgutil --forget leaves the files and the boot job in place. For the hand that stays on a regular pointer, the mouse for Mac mini post covers which mice macOS drives on its own, and the trackball for Mac post reads three more vendor installers the same way as this one.

FAQ

Does a SpaceMouse work on a Mac without the driver?

Only as a pointer. Without 3DxWare, macOS sees a generic HID device and the cap moves the cursor. Owners report the side buttons act as clicks. Blender, Fusion and other 3D apps need the 3Dconnexion frameworks, which only the driver installs.

Is the SpaceMouse driver native on Apple Silicon?

Yes. 3DxWare 10 has run natively on Apple Silicon since version 10.7.0 in January 2022. In version 10.8.12, 51 of 63 executables are universal. The 12 Intel-only files are plug-ins for older host apps such as Maya 2020 to 2023 and Unreal Editor 4.27 to 5.1. The helper and its extension are universal.

Why doesn't my SpaceMouse work in Onshape or another browser app on Mac?

Browser apps reach the SpaceMouse through 3Dconnexion's 3DxNLServer, a local server the driver runs on 127.51.68.120. Owners report Firefox-based browsers failing where Chromium browsers work. Sites that use the browser Gamepad API instead may see no device at all while the driver is running, because the driver holds it.

Method: on 2026-10-24 I downloaded 3DxWareMac_v10-8-12_r3901.dmg from 3Dconnexion's download server. The driver page returns 403 to scripted requests, so I took the link from an April 2026 Wayback capture of the page, and the 10.8.13 file wasn't reachable that way. On a Mac mini M4 running macOS 26.4.1 I mounted the image read-only and checked signatures with pkgutil --check-signature and spctl. I expanded both package layers with pkgutil --expand and extracted every component payload. I ran lipo -archs on all 63 Mach-O files and read the extension's Info.plist and entitlements, the launchd plists and 3DxDefaults.plist. Nothing was installed and no device was attached. Release history is from the 2026-06-26 release notes. Owner reports are from ScanRuler issue #12, a Hacker News comment and a Second Life bug archived on GitHub. The Blender code is from its GitHub mirror. Amazon prices and rating counts were read from the product pages the same day.
